A week very quickly turned into a day, which very quickly turned to night. It seemed like only yesterday that the ball had been announced, and Sirius (y/n) their little fight, which in turn caused that life changing event that happened between the two of them.

(y/n) and Lily sat in their bedrooms, their faces all cramped in front of their mirrors, which were bewitched to float above their dressers. Both girls clutched their lipstick or mascara, (y/n) had even brought along a hexed hair straightener, though she knew Lily wouldn't need it, her hair was always pin straight.

"So you and James." (y/n) began, the girl sighed and focused on her eye shadow.

"You and Sirius." She retorted.

"You look good together." (y/n) added, she couldn't understand Lily's hesitancy towards James, he was good enough as a person, and he was practically in love with her.

"Likewise." Lily said, she was going with neutrals, her hair and dress were already wild enough, plus a nice brown would accent her eyes.

"I'm excited, for tonight." (y/n) said, she couldn't think of what else to say. " I hope they play some real music at least." She added.

"C'mon, yknow it's going to be some lame orchestra." Lily said, (y/n) sighed, she was right. Not every brought around bewitched record players and vinyl. This was a Hogwarts dance after all, it was run by old school wizards who were far too outdated to even comprehend a record player.

"It's unfortunate really, but we'll manage." (y/n) sighed, she already knew that she would be hearing an earful from Sirius about the poor choice of music. It was hilarious since he acted as if he were a muggle born with his unusual passion for muggle music. He was an even bigger fan than (y/n) herself, or Lily for the matter, who really was a muggle born.

...

The girls finished up the last of their makeup, zipped up their dresses, slipped on their heels, and now it was time for the ball, twas a night that everyone was truly waiting for.

"I should've worn flats." (y/n) groaned, her feet were already killing her, with a whopping two inches to them. They were very pathetic, though a change for the girl, she wore loafers to school, it was the most old fashioned thing about her, and Sirius would always tease her for it.

"If you're worried about Sirius, then don't, I'm sure he won't even notice that you've got them on." Lily said, (y/n) hadn't even considered the fact, though it was now a new fear added on to the piling list for tonight. She'd forgotten about their barely different height difference, and now the words from Jolene were coming back to her. She would just barely be taller than him, not on purpose of course, though it would still be noticeable.

"I hadn't even thought of it." (y/n) said reassuringly, her acting was spot on because Lily seemed to be buying it, sometimes (y/n) really was a good liar, and she used that skill frequently.

Lily began to walk at a great pace down the crowded halls, nearly losing (y/n) in her tracks. She'd never been in more of a hurry, it was seriously concerning to (y/n). She surely wasn't persuing James, he was nowhere in sight, and Lily wouldn't be caught chasing after a boy, literally at least. Perhaps she was escaping from him then? She was greatly hesitant in her conversation with (y/n) the previous week, and she hadn't even brought up the fact that the boy was her date.

"We're nearly there." Lily said, the two girls could already hear the chatter coming from the grand hall.

"Are the boys there already, is that why we came here?" (y/n) asked in confusion, she'd only followed Lily out of fear of losing her, though she had only now realized where she'd ended up. She couldn't leave Sirius behind like that, he'd totally freak.

"Oh my, I completely forgot." Lily said, though her lie was hardly convincing, it didn't seem like she was trying to win her friend over. "Do you think James will be mad at me?" Lily asked, she placed a palm to her forehead and exhaled deeply, perhaps she really had forgotten then.

"No, of course not, he's in love with you." (y/n) said, she crossed her arms and leaned to one side, Lily nodded in agreement, it was rather obvious after all.

"You should head back then, I'm too tired to walk back there all by myself, Sirius can just meet inside, it's not like we have to walk in together or anything." (y/n) added, she made a point, and there weren't any announcements being heard from the grand hall.

"Alright then, I'll try and explain things to Sirius." Lily said, she headed back quickly in the direction that the girls had just arrived from. She could run in heels, that was for sure, and she made it look easy.

(y/n) sighed and turned around, she gazed at her fellow classmates who were dressed so nicely, some of which looked a little too nice. It felt more like a fashion show than a ball in some cases, a girl had worn a dress with moving flowers on it, it was a wonder how she managed to pull it off. Another girl, her dress was not as nice, had a color changing dress, which was greatly impressive, to say the least.

The girl looked down at her dress and smiled, she was perfectly fine with what she had, it was within her comfort zone, and that was what mattered. (y/n) rounded the corner, eventually reaching the grand hall, which was speckled with all sorts of ornate decorations.

Snow was falling from the ceiling, though it never seemed to land on the floor, or the students. There were ice sculptures, and floating candles, and snacks and punch. It was truly a sight to behold, and it left everyone speechless, that is until you grew used to the decorations, then it was slightly less shocking.

"Oh my." Was all that had managed to escape the girls lips, she clasped a hand in front of her gaped mouth as she tried not to look so damn surprised. "It's beautiful." The girl muttered to herself, she eventually ventured into the winter wonderland, she couldn't remain at the door any longer, or else would begin to make a fuss.

(y/n) began to look around for familiar faces, though she was ultimately unsuccessful, it appeared that she was early, either that or everyone was just fashionably late. She had already come to the assumption that the Marauders were to arrive at least thirty minutes late, it was never their thing to be on time, or follow any rules in general.

That left (y/n) with plenty of time to at least try and make conversation with strangers, who knows, maybe she'd make new friends in the time that she had without Lily and the others.

The smile of (y/n)'s face faded a little as she locked eyes with a certain figure, he was standing in the corner of the hall, drink in hand, and friend at his side. The girl's eyes grew wide with fear as he began to approach her, it was a reunion that she had not been hoping for, not in the slightest.
