(y/n) entered Astronomy with a grand smile on her face, she'd made it right as the bell rang, meaning that she was technically on time. Sirius had just walked in as well, he smiled at (y/n) and pointed to their usual spot in class.

The two sat and watched as the last few stragglers entered, there was always a short period of time where the professor would prepare things for the class, allowing students to chat for a little.

"These rumors are getting out of hand." Sirius stated, he stretched his hands out and scooted closer to (y/n).

"I know, it's ridiculous." (y/n) sighed, she folded her arms and leaned to the left a little, in order to get away from Sirius' unruly smelling cologne.

"There aren't any points of entry from the ocean, and there have only ever been selkies in the lake." Sirius added, (y/n) was thankful that he was playing along with her little lie. Though he really had no choice in the matter. "What's this." Sirius uttered, he had spotted something strange on (y/n)'s skirt, it was a white circular thing. The item resembled a fish scale, almost exactly and it was white in color, it was something Sirius had never seen before.

"Its from an arts and crafts project, I have a friend who's into that stuff." (y/n) said quickly, there was the slightest quiver in her voice, though her expression was solid. She was thankful for the years of lying, or else Sirius would have found out about her ages ago. (y/n) attempted to take back the item from Sirius, this attempt was very unsuccessful.

"Then you wouldn't mind if I kept it then." Sirius said, he hoped that (y/n) would react to his response, he was saddened when she didn't. He still had the slightest thought in his mind, perhaps (y/n) was making a story up, maybe she really was the mermaid. Though from the looks of it, that theory seemed improbable, and in his eyes, impossible.

"Knock yourself out." (y/n) sighed, she hoped that her lack of care would help get Sirius off of her trail, he had gotten so very close to finding out. (y/n) found herself lying to the boy more than telling the truth, she didn't mean to hurt him by it, though that was what was happening.

That's where her and Remus were different, Remus would have told them by now, firstly because he's horrible with secrets, and secondly because he wouldn't want a relationship that could come crashing down once he was revealed. With (y/n) it was a little different, people were more taken aback and less scared.

(y/n) turned to Sirius, he was seriously buying in to all of this. (y/n) felt guilty all of a sudden, her way of evading that was pretending that everything was a game, it was a sort of distraction for herself. She didn't enjoy lying to everyone, she was simply afraid of change, and maybe someday she'd tell the rest of the boys, she just needed time.

...

"Ahem, attention." Sirius stated, all the Marauders had been getting ready for bed, though Sirius had other plans. He had gotten the attention of all his mates.

"You guys know about those mermaid rumors." Sirius began, immediately Remus shook his head, he felt his stomach drop. Had Sirius finally found out, he was sure that (y/n) hadn't told him. Was he the one at the lake?

"Yeah." Peter said, his face lit up with excitement, he had been more than entertained with all the variations of the rumors and what not.

"I've got proof of it." Sirius said with a smile, he held up the white scale, and immediately Remus' face went white as a sheet. To his extreme luck, Sirius didn't seem to notice his expressions, he was more focused on his prized possession.

"Is it real?" James muttered, he seemed skeptical of the artifact, it was very strange looking to say the least.

"It has to be, go on and touch it." Sirius stated, he first gave the item to Peter, who seemed the most excited about all of this, then James, and lastly Remus, who was waiting for the bad news to arrive any second now.

"Where'd you get this." Remus scoffed, he folded his arms and stared Sirius in the eyes. He assumed the worst case scenario, though perhaps he was mistaken?

"(y/n)." Sirius said plainly, he stared back at Remus, who was standing tall and wearing a gruesome expression.

"Elaborate." James said.

Sirius sighed and sat down, all the attention was on him, since he'd gotten the attention of all three of the Marauders now.

"It was on her skirt, she lied about where she got it from." Sirius stated, his tone was strange, and the others weren't sure where he was taking the conversation. Sirius brought out the book, and held the scale up to one of the pages, it was an exact match, the only difference being the color.

Remus felt that sick feeling again as Sirius held up the scale, couldn't he get along with it already.

"So what, you think (y/n)'s a mermaid or something." James sighed, he was awfully confused Sirius' so-called elaborating.

"No no, come on, she's seen the mermaid and she's protecting it." Sirius said sternly, the others nodded in agreement, it seemed absurd that (y/n) would have such a secret like that. Remus let out a sigh of relief as Sirius began to speak, he could add on to this, and surely convince the boys to believe (y/n)'s lie.

"Yeah, we all know (y/n), she's very kind and considerate, and she told me about all of this. I just didn't want you all to freak out." Remus added on, Sirius then turned his attention to Remus, his face was red hot with anger.

"She told you and not me, you're not even close with her." Sirius whined, Remus shrugged his shoulders and waved his hands in an act of peace.

"I'm sorry, I should've said something sooner." Remus pleaded, the others backed up Remus, the strange aggression was rare for Sirius.

"So (y/n)'s not the mermaid?" Peter muttered, the others slapped their foreheads simultaneously.

"No Peter, she's not."
