The sun was high in the sky and sweat rolled down my exposed back and chest in painfully slow trails. There were no clouds for cover as I panted hard. Each breath rattled inside my chest as my legs began to tremble slightly. Hands out and stance ready I faced my sparring partner standing a few feet away.
His lavender eyes pierced mine in an intense stare, hands clenched and ready to throw another punch. Fist fighting wasn't my strongest talent but I've been able to get by on mediocre punches and my sword skills in the demon slayer corps...until recently when my training was taken up a notch. Part of that notch included a new partner to practice with, Sanemi the wind hashira.
I should've felt honored but honestly, I was horrified. I was going from mediocre fighting skills to having to fight an actual hashira. Even though I'm not honored and slightly terrified of his presence, there have been multiple times in the past month where it's been nice to be around him.
Of course that usually happened when we weren't supposed to see each other as an enemy in the ring. Countless times Sanemi has let his competitive side take over leaving me more battered and bruised than necessary but he usually makes up for it at the end.
Today I could feel it was one of those days by the smirk plastered on his face. By my next intake of breath he charged forward coming at me from my right. I took a step back bracing myself as he rammed into my side. My feet slipped a bit before getting a better grip on the ground to which I readjusted and went lower, right into his stomach. I pushed outwards hearing a satisfying grunt from him.
He quickly snatched my wrists and twisted sideways as I felt my body fly through the air straight onto my back with a crunch. All the air from my body seemed to leave as I gasped horribly. My lungs refused to work for painful seconds till I finally gained my bearings. Sanemi leaned over me.
"Get up, we're not done," he barked out before moving back a bit, getting into his stance. I groaned out, trying to prop my body up. Slow and agonizing, I pulled myself back onto my feet. I frowned at the dirt smeared over my chest before glancing back up at Sanemi.
I didn't want to continue, it was no longer fun or educational, just a way for him to bat me around for his enjoyment. My chest heaved in a desperate attempt to breathe but was cut off by Sanemi darting forward again, landing a punch right to my gut. Blood flew from my mouth and pain erupted from my middle. I hit the ground hard as my throat spasmed. My muscles ached as my stomach clenched.
I curled up in a pathetic ball hoping to blink away the tears that were threatening to form. Shudders and trembles crawled through my skin in waves. Sanemi once again stood over me, his shadow falling over my broken body. He crouched down before grabbing my head by the hair. I let out a whimper of protest as my tears fell. He released me but stayed near.
"Please..." I whispered hoarsely, "...enough." I didn't want to look him in the eye. I didn't know what to expect if I did.
Minutes passed by as I finally caught my breath and was able to assess the damage to my body. Just by feeling the pain, I could tell he bruised my stomach badly along with my wrists. Minor flares of pain were along my sides, his favorite spot to bash me. Luckily nothing was done to my face or legs so I was still operational, for the most part, but I just hated when he would take things too far like this.
After a while I attempted to rise. My arms shook as I scrambled to find a hold on the ground, not daring to glance at Sanemi who watched on. I managed a bitter laugh before tucking my legs underneath and gently pulling myself up to my feet. My body swayed as I clutched my stomach, new tears rolling down my face at the pain.
