Chapter 35 - Tourists in New York

Y/n's POV:

So far, our day out in New York has been really good fun. After the slight blip this morning, Ava has taken to Hunter and they're now besties. I'm not sure who's the bigger kid out of the two of them. But I'm so happy that they are getting on so well.

I feel really relaxed around Scarlett's mum and brother. They have really welcomed me and made me feel comfortable. For example, this morning when Ava and I were up early, her mum instantly made a fuss over Ava and suggested that we cooked together. We had so much fun dancing together and talking. It was like I've known Melanie for years, not just a day.

Visiting the Statue of Liberty was fun, and it was nice that Hunter was happy to look after and play with Ava. It meant that I had time with Scarlett and could talk with her mum more. Once we have gotten off of the ferry, Scarlett decides that we're going to have some lunch at her favourite pizza place, before carrying on with our sightseeing tour.

"Come on it's this way!" Scarlett says excitedly, tugging at my hand, almost dragging me down the street. "Someone is very excited for pizza." I tease and Scarlett just shrugs and carries on directing us. "This place does the best pizza in the city!" She eventually stops outside a pizza place called Lombardi's. "This was the first Pizzeria in the United States and has been one since 1905." Scarlett tells us enthusiastically.

We follow her in, and we're greeted by a friendly server who guides us to a table near the back. When we get to the table, I kneel down to help Ava out of her coat. "Mummy, can I sit with Hunter?" She whispers to me, and I smile that she wants to sit with him but is nervous about it. "Why don't you ask him? I'm sure he won't mind." I encourage her.

I watch as she walks towards Hunter, who is taking his mom's coat. She gives his shirt a little tug and he looks down at her with an instant smile. "What's up princess?" He asks as she fiddles with her fingers. "Can I, uh..." She hesitates and looks at me. I smile at her and nod, encouraging her to turn back around. "Please may I sit next to you?" She asks more confidently, and Hunter's smile grows. "Of course! I'd love that." He replies and helps her into her seat.

Melanie takes her place the other side of Ava, whilst Scarlett and I sit next to each other on the opposite side of the table. Whilst we're looking at the menu, both Hunter and Scarlett are talking excitedly about this place and how often they visit. "I come or order a pizza here at least once a week when I'm in New York." Scarlett shares and I can honestly say I'm getting excited for this pizza with how much she likes it.

We order our drinks and pizza, enjoying the time to chat and get to know each other better. Hunter was telling us about the non-profit company he works for, installing solar panels on emergency service buildings so they can still operate if there is a power outage. They're starting in Puerto Rico and hoping to branch out to other countries soon. It's really fascinating to listen to him talk about it as he's so enthusiastic. Ava asks lots of questions and he takes the time to explain how solar panels work. As usual, she listens intently as she takes in all the new information she is hearing.

While he's talking, I notice the loving and proud look that Scarlett has on her face as she listens in. Although they don't get to see each other often, you can see how close they are. Apparently, Scarlett helps to support his work as often as she can. It's partly why I was more worried about meeting Hunter than her mum. They're so close, if he didn't like me, that would a definitely nail in the coffin for our relationship.

When our food arrives, I'm instantly salivating as the wonderful smell of the pizza fills the air. The pizzas are huge, and I can't disagree with Scarlett. This is genuinely some of the best pizza I've had. I laugh when I notice that Ava's face has quickly become covered in tomato sauce. Before I can lean over, Scarlett has nudged Hunter, who quickly grabs a napkin and starts to help clean her up.
