«Come on Lilly, the water is hot» I say after diving into the ocean from the rocks. I wanted to get a taste of the ocean and not just the pool, so I dragged my oldest daughter with me. Taylor avoids the ocean if she can because she doesn't like the creatures that live there, so she stayed with the twins. Lilly on the other hand, she is up for anything that gives her an adrenalin kick.
She jumps in the water and come up right away «you're right, it's so nice here. Mom and the twins are really missing out» she grins at me. She is a teenager now and loves to tease her mother, even when it drives Taylor insane. I guess that's just how teenage girls are like at this age.
«She is. But I don't think the twins should jump from the rocks anyway» we swim around for a while before we get up and sit on our towels on the rocks. I love Santorini, Taylor and I have been her twice, but we have never taken the kids here. Santorini has sort of been mine and Taylors special place because this was the first place we traveled together. It was also where the twins where conceived, but the kids don't need to know that.
«Are you ready for high school?» I ask her and she sighs. «I think so. It means harder classes and more responsibilities, but you know I don't mind that stuff» she is smart and determined. Wouldn't think that a adrenalin junkie and high energy child like her would love school so much, but she has learned over the years to sit still and pay attention. It was a struggle when she was younger to get her to pay attention at school, but once she got interested in science that changed. She might be 14 years old, but already knows that she wants to do research in a lab when she is older. It's a contrast between her athletic stuff with her figure skating to her love for how the world works and all that, but it's what makes her our Lilly.
«Remember that there will be boys there, and you're getting to the age where that may be more interesting than it's been before. And I want you to remember that you're in control of your own body and all that. If anyone tries to take advantage of you, always come to your old dad and he will fix it. No means no and keep your innocence for as long as you can because there is no rush to take adult steps» I say, and she groans as she buries her face in her hands. «Dad seriously. Mom already had that talk with me. No need to have it again»
«You're a teenager so you will hear us tell you a million trillion times. I'm your dad, I might not be hip with the kids these days, but I will always look out for my little girl» she bursts out laughing «dad, god... don't say hip. It's embarrassing. No offense, I love you, but you're old. You're not cool with the teenagers. With the twins, sure but not teenagers»
It's been 7, almost 8, years since I came into Lilly and Taylors lives. It's crazy to think about how fast time has passed, but it's been the best years of my life. now we are a family of five and it couldn't be more perfect... well we are six if you count our cat, Meredith. Lilly begged for two years to get a cat, and we finally caved.
«Don't grow up too quickly Lilly. You have all the time in the world to be an adult, but only a few years left of being a kid. There is no need to grow up quicker than you have to because the adult world comes with lots of things that you shouldn't have to deal with at 14. Some of the kids you will meet in high school might be acting way above their age, but you don't need to do that. I want you to remember that you are perfect the way you are, and it's okay to not grow up too fast. Your mom and I get to be the adults, you get to be a kid» I scoot closer and wrap an arm around her.
«Dad. You coming into my life was the best thing that could have happened. I love you. And I have no intention of growing up too fast, I promise»
