Monday morning, while we are eating breakfast, our chef of security grace Harrison brings up two duffle bags and a suitcase «team USA delivery for Lilliana» she says as she comes into the kitchen and after saying good morning to us all.
«Yes, finally my gear is here» Lilly beams and thank grace for bringing it to her. Our security gets all deliveries to the security apartment before we get it so security can check it for anything that's illegal or that can harm out family. We have had some shady deliveries over the years, so they check everything before we get it. We have children in this apartment, so we want to make sure things are safe.
Augustine and James are upstairs getting their uniforms on with Taylor, so it's only Elena, me and Lilly here eating breakfast. that reminds me that Elena doesnt know about Lillys stuff other than her being a figure skater. «Lilly, maybe you should wait with going through them until you get home later. And could you tell Elena about why you get gear» I ask her but I'm not actually asking her to do it, I'm telling her to.
She comes back after pushing the bags and suitcase against the wall to finish her breakfast. «I'm on the national team for the USA figure skating. The season is about to start so I get my gear delivered. I've been on the national team for two seasons now, but then I was on the junior team. Now I'm on the normal team USA. We have to wear the gear at camps and when we travel to competitions. Thats where I'm going this weekend, to team USA camp» she tells her.
They will have a weekend of workouts to prove their ranking on the team before having a showcase on Sunday. After the showcase the girls and boys are told which competitions they will be attending while they are all fighting for a spot on the team going to the world championship in late March. This summer she was on a week-long camp where all the potential team USA members skated their way on the team or not. Lilly ranked 5th out of 8 girls that made the team, so that's pretty good, especially since she is straight out of the junior team. In the spring she got bronze at the junior world's competition, only being beat by a girl from China and one from Japan.
«So does that mean you travel a lot for competitions?» Elena asks and Lilly nods. «Yes. But it all depends on how I'm doing and stuff. Either mom or dad travel with me because it's out of the country. There are seven competitions in ISU Grand Prix of figure skating all over the world. how I place on those I go to impacts on if team USA think I'm good enough to go to worlds in March»
Whenever Lilly talks about skating she lights up like a Christmas tree. She has been skating since the two of us convinced Taylor that she should get to try it. Ever since she first put on those skates, we knew it would be impossible to part them. Over the years she has advanced a lot, but we have tried to help her balance normal life and skating because we don't want her to lose her childhood to being a athlete. It's possible to balance them both if you prioritize enough. During the off season she skates four days a week at least and the rest of the days she can skate if she wants to and have time. We do prefer she spends that time with friends or just being a kid, but that doesn't always work. Before competitions however she skates more because she needs it to get to the level she needs to be at. We never hold her back because this is something she loves. We just try to help her balance everything. However, the thing we don't compromise on is school. School comes before skating in our family and Lilly is well aware of that, her coaches too. She needs to have something to fall back on when she is done skating or if she gets injured, that's her education.
Today is going to be Elena's first day at school and I can tell she is nervous. Starting a new school is probably scary, especially when so much in her life has changed recently. from one second to another her life was turned upside down and she moved in with people she doesn't know. That can't be easy on anyone, especially a 11-year-old that has never had consistency in her life.
