The first thing Lan Wangji noticed when he entered Purgatory was the scent.
The bar smelled… comfortable, like the beginning of autumn, with its distinct scent of sandalwood, fresh citrus, and something heady underneath, something darker–something… not human.
A bit strange for a bar to feel like home, but it was the feeling he got from entering it. Like he could finally settle down and relax after a long day of work.
And apparently he was not the only one who could sense it, since Evie and the kids entered without a proper care as they were taught to and quickly approached the bar, where a man was standing there, cleaning up the table and whistling a tune.
They knew not to get ahead of themselves, but apparently the relaxed atmosphere of this bar could cause someone to lose their sense of vigilance.
The second thing he noticed was the man himself.
Lan Wangji knew that the man was supposedly not human, since he never saw any human that was that beautiful.
Yes, beautiful was the right word to describe him.
He was tall–almost as tall as himself–and he also had very long hair, as dark as the night. His face was as beautiful as those of an angel–maybe even more–but the most prominent feature was his eyes. They were the color of piercing silver, with a golden aura between the dark pupil and the outer ring. And they looked like they could swallow him into their depths.
Lan Wangji took a second longer to compose himself, before he noticed that his companions were already taken to the man and they were talking nonstop before he came after them and sat right in front of the man.
"Pardon my companion's intrusion, Sir…" Lan Wangji spoke to the man after he served the other with soda water and a big bucket of french fries, onion rings, vegetables with crispy tempura batter and slices of sourdough bread with a few kinds of dips. All vegetarian.
Hmm…
"Ah, my name is Wei Wuxian, but you may call me Xianxian." He gave Lan Wangji a smile so bright, the latter suddenly felt a skip in the beat of his heart. "Do you want some soda water too? Or anything else? Water? Tea? We have some special tea here that you guys will love." He grinned as he took out a box of a specialized tea, which could only be bought only from one particular store–in Heaven.
"What are you?" Lan Wangji suddenly felt that his heart was beating faster and it was something that he never felt before, like his whole body was burning and his senses were overwhelmed by this man's… presence.
"Ah, that's rather a blunt question, isn't it?" Wei Wuxian chuckled and Lan Wangji's body vibrated to the tune of his voice, and it started to make him wary about this… evil warlock.
Yes, he was surely an evil warlock. And a powerful one too, to cause him to… tingle like this.
He didn't like the feeling one bit, but then he caught Fei was looking at him with a strange look, and she tilted her head in question.
Fei was an empath and a healer, and when Lan Wangji started to feel all kinds of strange feelings, she must have caught some of them.
"I am just a man who works in this place." Wei Wuxian suddenly cut the tension that built within Lan Wangji with his calm words. "But I've seen enough to know that you guys are angels. You're too attractive to be humans!"
Wei Wuxian beamed again and Lan Wangji felt the same strange feeling in his gut and the faster beat of his heart. It was like the man didn't even realize how attractive he himself was.
He was about to question the casualness of the man's statement, when he felt the pressure. And this time, it was not only him, but all the other three seemed to feel it too. The pressure of someone above their level. Way above.
