She noticed that he watched her like a hawk, and she started to sweat.
Did he find out?
No. Impossible.
But then he asked her the question.
“Do you perhaps have a brother or a cousin?”
She quickly shook her head.
“Unfortunately no, I am an orphan and I just moved here to the town.” She decided that it was time to change the subject of their conversation since she felt like she was under interrogation and she knew how ruthless this man was when he investigated people to find out the truth.
“So, should I contact anyone to pick you up? Family? Spouse?” She tried to divert his attention somewhere else so that he could not ask her more questions.
“It’s fine. I will leave once my wounds heal.” He dismissed her so easily but she could see that she was still under his suspicion. And meanwhile, she did not know what to do with him except for doing something to get rid of him quickly before he found out the truth.
“Okay then. I will leave you to rest and I will be back later to change your bandage.” She quickly picked up the empty bowl and left the pitcher of water with a glass on his bedside table, then hurriedly got out of the room.
Three days went by so fast, and both of them became accustomed to sharing the same space – although she was still stiff at times and she only came into the room to change his bandages and brought his meal. Other than those times, she seemed to disappear somewhere – leaving him alone.
It’s funny how he enjoyed living in a secluded place like this – alone with his thoughts.
He almost never had a chance to relax since his job was so demanding of him, and he barely had time to breathe, let alone living like this. Everyone seemed to want to get something from him and he was fed up with those people.
But when it was time for his meal and she did not come, he knew that his peaceful time was over.
And when his most trusted friend was coming through the bedroom door, he already prepared himself to be back to his own life.
“Your Majesty.” The person who came through the door paid his respect. “I am sorry that we are only able to find you after three days. Please give us an appropriate judgment later.”
“Stand up, General Wei. It’s not your fault.” He stood up and the General gave him his black dragon robe. He wore it and then asked him about the woman who had helped him when he was hurt.
“Where is the woman who lived here? Was she the one who called you?”
There was a silence for a second longer than usual, before his question was answered.
“There was no one here, Your Majesty.” The man called General Wei cleared his throat. “We found the trace of the battle and this is the only house in the vicinity that shows a sign of life.”
“Hmm… strange.” He touched his bandaged wound. “I want to show my gratitude to her for helping me out when I was hurt, maybe she was out on an errand. Please offer her to work as my private maid when she comes back.”
Another silence before General Wei answered him.
“I will deliver your message to her, Your Majesty. Now, shall we go back to the Palace? Your siblings were worried sick about you when you disappeared without a trace.”
“Sure, lead the way, General.”
