“Where’s Duncan?”

Wei Wuxian asked Ajax – who was cleaning the bar alone – as soon as they arrived.

“Duncan? He was out for errands. Why are you guys looking for him?” Ajax was confused because Freyr and Wei Wuxian never asked about Duncan outside of work.

“We just came back from Utopia and they never saw the angels that we told Duncan to drop by there so we want to ask him about it.” Freyr explained it to Ajax who frowned at the statement.

“That’s weird.” Ajax took out his phone and tried to call Duncan but he didn’t answer. He tried a couple more times and still no answer.

“I’ll see where he is.” Ajax put away his phone and started to cast a tracking spell.

After chanting a few spells and creating a small golden butterfly, he looked at Wei Wuxian.

“I’m coming with you.”

Wei Wuxian was surprised with Ajax’s tone. He never heard the warlock speak like that – with some kind of urgency.

“Sure, the more the merrier. Just let Freyja and Blake watch over the bar.” Freyr shrugged in his easy going manner, and Ajax nodded.

“Thanks.”

They left immediately after they informed Blake and Freyja – who just came back from doing errands – and they left while following the butterfly.

After a while of following the butterfly, they arrived at the edge of the forest that he went to not a week ago regarding the investigation into the missing angels. And it pained Wei Wuxian to remember that he just dumped the angels and now they were nowhere to be seen.

“Strange.” Wei Wuxian looked around his surroundings. “This all looks familiar. Do you have any idea where we’re going?” He asked Ajax.

“Judging from the trajectory, we are going straight to the center of the forest.” Ajax answered him while still concentrating on following the butterfly.

“Did you say that you found the beast’ babies in the abandoned hospital?” Freyr asked Wei Wuxian. “What are the odds that we’re heading straight to the same place?”

“I’d say the odds are pretty high.” Ajax pointed at the direction where the butterfly was heading and they all could see the top of the abandoned hospital from a far.

“I have a very bad feeling about this.” Wei Wuxian sped up, followed by Freyr and Ajax.

And as they suspected, the butterfly led them straight to the hospital when it disappeared.

Wei Wuxian quickly entered the building and found nothing had changed from the last time he went there, and he headed straight to the secret laboratory where they last found the mythical beasts and the angels’ grace.

Lan Wangji opened his eyes in a strange, cold room. He tried to get up but his body felt heavy, and he felt cold all over – which he never felt before since his grace would protect him from any climate change. But this time he felt strangely lethargic and sluggish, like he was not in his own body.

He looked around – although moving any part of his body felt like moving tons of bricks – and found out that he was inside a strange room instead of the warm one that he spent with Wei Wuxian.

Then it suddenly struck him.

Was this the punishment from Heaven? From sullying his holy body by fornicating with a lesser being?

No. The punishment from Heaven would be harsher, and he could end up in Hell. This was not Hell, not unless Hell smelled a lot like a hospital.

He tried to get up once again but his body seemed to refuse the simple command, and instead, he could hear footsteps coming closer, and he saw an unfamiliar man approaching him with a glint in his eyes.

“The Captain of the Holy Order. What a catch this time.” He then chuckled and Lan Wangji couldn’t help but feel disgust. “This time, your grace alone would make a whole lot of difference.”

Lan Wangji’s sight was blurry, so he could not see who was taunting him. But he felt like he had heard the man’s voice before since it was so familiar, he just couldn’t place it especially with his mind muddled like this.

“Sorry, but I have to leave now. I hope you have a better life next time. Please just don’t be an angel again. They suck.” The man chuckled and Lan Wangji could hear the footsteps moving away from him as he tried hard to get up and catch the bastard – whom he was sure was behind the kidnapping of those angels.

Come on! He really needed to follow the man and catch him! That was the reason why he came down to earth after all!

But then again, he got a sudden attack of bad vertigo and his body felt heavy like it was made of lead, and they hindered his movement.

After a long time of struggling to move, he finally could sit and he grabbed the nearest object to support his body, when his vision blurred and he felt like someone was pounding on his head with a huge hammer. He almost keeled over from the pain since he never felt pain like this for all of his life.

He knew it was futile. If the stranger said that he had taken his grace… then it was a matter of time before he perished, since angel’s grace was essentially their soul.

Lan Wangji just wished that he could see… him… again, to at least say goodbye – and thank you. For the short and sweet memory they shared.

The last thing he remembered before he fell down on the cold floor was the sound of someone familiar and the approaching footsteps then he was wrapped in the warmth and familiar smell that he longed for – and he wondered if this was a dream – before he passed out cold.
