Wei Wuxian could not find anything in the place where they first found the mythical beasts, but his intuition told him that there was something there, so he asked Ajax to cast his special magic – which would turn any place into a wireframe grid lines and revealed any secret room and also if there was any people around.

The search was successful when they found a secret niche behind one of the bookcases and it led into an eerie dark basement, and without thinking too much, Wei Wuxian flew downstairs.

Ajax only sighed before he made a small flame ball and threw it inside to light up the way, then he and Freyr followed up toward the darkness.

They were all moving down at a high speed, and it didn’t take long for them to find the room.

The room itself was not that spacious, but it was clean – and empty. There was only a huge mirror on one of the walls, nothing else.

“Check for any trap, any hidden niche, anything. I bet there is something here that we can not see.” Wei Wuxian started to knock on the wall and Ajax followed. Freyr – on the other hand – walked toward the mirror and watched his own face looking back at him.

“There’s something wrong with this mirror.” He frowned and moved closer.

“What? Wei Wuxia quickly approached him and observed the mirror.

“I don’t look as handsome as I usually do.” Freyr touched the surface of the mirror, and to their surprise, the surface rippled as if it was the surface of water – not mirror.

“Huh. This is not a mirror.” Freyr pushed his hand forward and he disappeared into the secret room.

“I guess being a narcissist has its own merit.” Ajax stifled a laugh as soon as Freyr was gone.

Wei Wuxian and Ajax quickly followed, and they entered another brightly lit room with the heavy smell of antiseptic – just like a hospital room – and Wei Wuxian immediately saw that the person he was looking for was trying to get up from the bed, and he quickly approached him to help him.

“Hey there, easy, I got you.” Wei Wuxian propped Lan Wangji easily back to the bed and he signaled Ajax to come closer. “You remember Ajax, right? He will check your condition.” He felt a huge relief wash over him when he saw that Lan Wangji was still alive, he just hoped that nothing happened to him.

“I found the other brats.” Freyr informed them as he found Jingyi and Fei. “And the weak one too.” He pointed at Evangeline.

The three of them were lined up on top of a hospital bed and they looked very pale and weak, like they had been drained of their life force.

“Check if they still have their grace, Freyr.” Wei Wuxian prayed that this was not going to be the worst case scenario that he had been thinking about.

But when he saw Ajax shake his head, he felt weak on his knees. The worst thing had happened after all.

“I’ve given him a little bit of energy – enough to sustain himself – but he has lost his grace, and you know what it means.”

Death.

It meant death would come to the angels who had lost their grace.

“Can you… can you do something about it? Can you think of a way to… save them?”

Ajax looked at Wei Wuxian for a minute before he answered him.

“The only thing I know from reading the grimoire is that if the angel lost their grace, they will be a human. That’s it.”

“So you’re saying that all four of them are now… humans?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

Wei Wuxian nodded as he tried to make sense of this all.

“At least they’re safe. Can you open a portal back home? We need to take care of these… people.”

“Are you sure you want to do that?” Freyr frowned when he heard Wei Wuxian’s request. “You know they will be swarming like pests once they find out that their star pupils have turned into humans, and you know how much we all hate angels.”

“Let’s consult Dottore first. I’ll bring him here.” Ajax stepped in between the two devourers before they fought against each other.

Freyr was always the hot headed one, and Wei Wuxian was also stubborn as hell although he hid it better with his smile and sunny disposition. It was better to call Dottore to decide what would happen to these angels-turned-humans rather than let any of them make the decision. At least Dottore would be thinking about the pros and cons and he would make a decision based on that.

“Sure, call him. I bet he will agree with my decision to dump them in the human’s world. After wiping their memories of course.” Freyr shrugged. He didn’t really care about the angels, or humans, because they were just annoying gnats for him. And the only way to deal with gnats was getting rid of them if they started to pester him.

Ajax agreed with Freyr although he did not voice his opinion. For him, humans and angels were a nuisance that always judged others and took justice into their own hands in the name of God, when they actually did everything for their own gain.

He had experienced it firsthand and it was not a good feeling – seeing his wife and daughter burned at the stake just because they had red hair and helped people with their healing gift. Of course he burned everyone and their village to dust – only sparring the animals – before he left and met Dottore.

Well, although he was not as vocal as Freyr and Freyja, he still hated them to his core and he would not hesitate to kill them if he must.

“I’ll be back in a flash.” Ajax opened the portal and disappeared inside without waiting for Wei Wuxian’s answer.

Of course Wei Wuxian knew that his friends and family hated angels and humans. He himself did not like them, especially after experiencing first hand what they did to others that did not resemble themselves.

But this was Lan Wangji, not a mere human – and not even an angel anymore.

He knew that Dottore would have the same opinion as Freyr and even Ajax – although the man did not say anything – and he also knew that he had to do something. Anything.

He decided then.

He turned around to call Freyr.

“Freyr, I’m sorry but I have to do this.” Wei Wuxian threw a special smoke bomb that could make even an elephant pass out – knowing that it would not do anything to Freyr except giving him an extra second to get away by opening a portal and taking the angels with him.

“What the…” Freyr was caught by surprise, and by the time the smoke was dispersed, Wei Wuxian and the angels were gone.
