MISTY'S PERSPECTIVE :D

I'd signed up to be a study buddy last month, mainly because I had A's in all my classes and it couldn't hurt to help someone else in need. I hadn't been asked to be someone's tutor yet until that Wednesday in particular. Right after being out with Kendall and Sandy, I'd checked my account and I got an email asking me to go to the library during lunch to meet whoever I needed to tutor.

So I went.

On the way I quickly chomped down a chili onion hot dog and popped two breath mints in my mouth.

"Misty, there's someone who I'd like you to meet," said Ms. Bangalore. "You're going to get to tutor him. You can start at lunch and meet every Thursday. He should be here any minute...if not already. You can go take a seat in the tutor room till he comes."

"OK. Cool beans," I said.

I waited in anticipation. After a couple of minutes Ms. Bangalore opened the door and said, "He's here."

I nearly gagged when I saw who it was. I thought I'd lose my lunch. "Rick?" It came out in an abrasive tone.

"Hi Misty," he answered, his gaze staring into mine.

"Great!" said Ms. Bangalore. "Looks like you two already know each other. I'll leave you two to it." She left and closed the door behind her.

"Great," I echoed, swallowing even though my mouth was dry. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears.

Totally great.

Of all people, it was Rick. Why did I have to end up with him?

Rick plopped down and tossed his backpack on the table.

So here I was, finding out that the person I was to tutor was one of my bullies, one that had been a jerk for years. This was so utterly horrible.

I hung my head.

"Look at me," Rick growled. He pushed my chin up so that I'd face him. "I'm only here because the school made me," he claimed, putting his feet on his desk. "So, I have my physics study guide homework with me." He pulled out his crumpled-up homework. "I was wondering if you could do it for me."

"I can't do that," I said. "But I'll help you with it. So that-"

He looked mad. He lunged forward and grabbed my arm so hard it hurt. "It's not a question, onion breath. Do my homework or you'll be sorry. And make it snappy. Don't write too neatly."

I was scared, so I just nodded. I took the homework from him and clicked my pen. "But I'm supposed to help you pass."

"My point exactly," he responded.

"By tutoring you."

"Are you calling me stupid?"

"No! No, I-"

"You're basically saying I'm an idiot."

"I didn't say that," I said. "I'm just saying that since I was miraculously assigned as your tutor, I need to tutor you. Ms. Bangalore said you're failing physics. And kind of failing math. We still have the egg drop project. And finals, which could pull your grade up to a mere D. Which is still technically a fail, but at least not an F. You want to pass, don't you?"

"I want to play football."

He was still stuck in an arm sling and not even close to full recovery.

"But...that's not going to happen anytime soon, is it?" I said.

"I guess not." He looked really bummed out.

"Shame. You were the best out there. You know, with all the touchdowns." I gave him a tight smile. "You were really fast."

"I was," he said. Then he leaned forward and put his arm (his right arm, which was not in a sling) around me. He was so close, I could feel his warm breath on my neck. Then he moved his hand down my arm as he grinned.

I felt all the hair on my arms stand up. Not in a good way. It was the kind where my whole body stiffened.

Was he serious?

I cringed and jumped up from my chair to get away from him. "What are you doing?"

"Nothing." He feigned innocence.

What a creeper.

I had no idea what on earth that was even for, but I could feel my lunch churning inside me and threatening to explode from my mouth.

"So when?" he asked.

I was confused. "When what?"

"When we going to meet up to work on the stupid project? I need the grade."

"Oh, how about at the cafe or something tomorrow..."

"How about today," he answered. "My house, right after school. You need to leave before my dad comes home. He's a grade-A asshole and I don't want him to know I had a girl over."

"I don't know if you realize, but I do have a life," I replied. "I was going to study with my friends after school at the Secret York Cafe."

"The genius only studies. You're such a nerd."

"I'm not a nerd. Don't call that."

"Bookworm."

"Shut up, Rick."

"Are you going to do my physics homework or not?" He cracked his knuckles, like he was about to beat me to a pulp.

"Not," I answered. "Your homework, your responsibility."

His lips curled into a malevolent snarl. I recoiled. That's when I was saved by the bell.

R I I I I I I I I I I I N G !

End of lunch.

I grabbed my backpack and slung it over my shoulder, then shoved his homework into his hand. "Good luck."

I left the room quickly and did not bother to turn around to see Rick's reaction, but I could imagine him giving me a death glare.

Or a creep stare.

"After school, my house, and don't even try to get out of it!" He called after me. "Wait for me at your locker."

I grimaced. No way.

No. Way.
