MISTY
Rick never picked up any of my phone calls. I was worried to death about him. I didn't believe he would ask me out on a date and not show up. I was so bummed out when I got home late at night, I just flopped on my bed and lay there for a long, long time.
"He never showed up to your date?" asked dad, coming into my room.
I sniffed and shook my head slightly. "No."
"Do you think something happened to him?"
"I don't know. I mean he's Rick. He could do anything. I don't really want to talk about it."
"Well in case you do, I'm always here, bud."
"Thanks."
"Dates can always go wrong. It'll fix itself. Hopefully you can get an explanation from Rick. "
"I hope so," I replied.
So I decided to wait for him the next day at school. I found him after class and hoped he'd talk to me.
"Hi Rick," I said casually.
"Hey," he said. "What do you want?"
Well that was sharp, his tone. "Um, you didn't come to the date last night. Were you feeling OK?"
"Was I feeling OK? You were the one who was sick, but then I found out you weren't."
"What?" I replied. "I wasn't sick, Rick."
"My point exactly. You lied about it."
"What?" I answered, completely confused because nothing added up. "Rick, slow down."
"No, I think you know. Stop playing dumb. I know you're smarter than that."
"Where-" I began, but I was interrupted by Rand, who just butted into our talk.
"Aloha, Ricky," Rand said. "Last night was so fun. We should kiss again sometime."
"Rick, you didn't!" I said accusingly.
"Uh-oh Ricky, I think Misty looks mad," said Rand.
"Misty, I have no idea what she's talking about," said Rick.
"I don't know what anyone's talking about," I fumed.
"Doesn't it make sense, Misty?" said Rand, from behind Rick's shoulder. "But I'm afraid it doesn't concern you. Not anymore."
"Rand, what are you talking about?" said Rick. "Just ignore her. And Misty...I thought you were different from other girls."
"I-I am..." I faltered.
"No, you're not," replied Rick, and with that he turned around and walked away.
Rand stood there with a nasty smirk. I wanted to just wipe it off her face. "Guess what, Misty. Rick was texting me last night." She unlocked her phone and showed me her screen. On it, Rick's texts from last night, 6:26, read, you're so hot babe. I luv u. Come over. Xoxo <33
She clearly wanted a reaction out of me. And I did have a reaction - inside I felt my heart breaking. But on the outside, I had to remain placid, because I knew Rand was just a mean girl and I couldn't betray myself. I could tell her smirk kind of faltered at her disappointment in herself for not triggering me.
That only left me even more confused for some reason. But one thing was clear: Rick ditched me for Rand. I almost couldn't believe him. He cheated.
Tears brimmed my eyes as I walked to my second period. I let the tears spill without bothering to fight them this time. I felt like puking. Rick was just a player and nothing else, because he'd been secretly seeing Rand and possibly a swarm of other girls behind my back, and I'd completely overestimated him. So much for them having been broken up. Rick had gone back to her. It completely made sense. He was using me for his personal pleasure. He was playing with me. He didn't mean any of his feelings that he'd expressed to me, because he was never really genuinely into me. Once a jerk, always a jerk. He'd always been the same asshole I've known.
Maybe it was all over.
For good.
