I had no idea how I even managed to agree to Rick's stupid threat, but I sure felt like a real idiot. I could not believe he would use intimidation as his tool to get whatever he wanted. He now had me wrapped around his little finger.
To anyone else, letting someone cheat off of you may seem like no biggie, as long as the teacher doesn't find out.
But to me it was. I was always the kind of girl who had a sense of right and wrong. I knew cheating was just wrong, and I wanted to live by my morals. I wanted to do what was right.
So being forced to do something wrong just made me feel very sick. My stomach was cramping with a rotten feeling.
I still felt pretty rotten, even as school ended on Friday.
The cafe was packed after school. It was deafening with chatter, so Kendall, Sandy and I went to sit outside. It was chilly and windy, but better than loud.
Then we saw Rand and Phoebe were walking right our way.
Oh no.
Rand and Phoebe invaded us at our table, smirking.
"What do you want?" Kendall said, annoyed.
"To talk to Misty here, you spud," replied Rand.
I balled my fists.
"Hey onion head," sneered Rand. "Since you're gonna be giving Rick the answers for the physics finals, why don't you let me sit next to you as well? So that I'll have all your answers too. Don't worry. You don't really have a choice. If you don't, I'll have my boyfriend sock you with his own fist."
"How about you get lost?" I shot back. "Unless you're implying that you're too dumb for physics without my help."
She looked offended. "Alright then," she said, cocking her head. "Then it'll be the hard way. I'll just tell Rick."
"No," I said quickly, suddenly feeling scared.
Rand raised a brow at me.
"I'll do it," I said. "I'll give you my answers."
"Perfect." She gave me one of those sinister smiles.
"Losers," Phoebe spat at us right before they left.
How dare Rand do that to me.
I took a sip of coffee, then felt the anger bubble from my stomach.
"It's OK," said Sandy. "Just give them the answers. You won't be doing anything wrong."
I shrugged. "I guess not."
"Omigod, I have a good idea," said Kendall. "Just give them the wrong answers and watch them fail."
"That's not a bad idea, but I don't want them to have more of a reason to torture me. They already hate me enough."
"Maybe. Maybe not," said Kendall.
"You know it," I said to her.
"Anyway, does anyone want to study for history finals with me?" said Sandy.
"I'm more worried about physics," I said. I opened my folder to grab my study guide. I'd tucked my study guide right on top of the other papers. But it wasn't there. I flipped through all my papers in my folder, but I couldn't find my study guide either.
I sucked in a breath. "Someone stole it."
"Stole what?" asked Kendall.
"My physics study guide."
"Did your dog eat it?" said Kendall.
"Chomper died last summer, dum-dum."
"Whoops, I must have amnesia," said Kendall.
Then I remembered Rick deliberately breaking my pencil at lunch. I remembered my folder on the table. I knew he was the one who stole it when I was busy sharpening it. Suddenly I was mad.
"It was Rick," I said.
"Rick stole your study guide?" said Kendall.
I nodded.
"Are you gonna confront him about it?" asked Sandy.
"Not by myself."
