I grinned to myself as I carefully slid along the roof, planted a foot on the top of the fence and leaped off. I made my way over to my bike and started the engine. It roared to life. Right as I sped off in the night, I glanced back at Misty's window, a welcoming yellow glow lighting the darkness.

Waving at me was Misty, staring out at me from her room. I waved back, gripped the handles, and then zoomed off.

Thank God New York had tons of lights up at night. Lights everywhere in the city allowed me to ride home at night without being scared of the dark. Having people know I'm scared of the dark is freakishly embarrassing, so if you dare to tell anyone about my secret I'll knock 'em out.

As I steered I was slightly dazed in reality by my thoughts. My black leather jacket was no use against the cold, but my distracting thoughts were.

Spending time with Misty was so new. It was nice, and she was such an interesting person. I was also glad she liked the necklace I'd bought her. And I loved the sex we had. 'Cuz you gotta admit, all a guy needs is a lass.

I kept a hand on the handle and an eye on the street as my vehicle roared through the silence of the neighborhood, then steered onto the road, picking up my speed. Going a little faster wouldn't hurt.

I approached the intersection. Just as I reached it, another car was speeding from the right, ignoring traffic rules and speeding a red light. My heart lurched, but before my brain or my body could switch on to react, the car slammed into me, sending me flying through the air. I landed on the pavement painfully. I groaned at the agony shooting up my spine. Luckily, I had my helmet on.

A figure stepped out of the car. I could barely make it out in the blackness of the night, but the face was one I easily recognized.

"Rand?" I said wearily. Had that out-of-her-mind girl seriously been brainless enough to car-slam me like that? She could have killed me like some cut-throat serial killer.

"I wanted you back," said Rand, stepping toward me. "And what did you do instead? You started dating the loser."

"Rand, what do you want?" I asked. Despite the pain surging through my back, I forced myself to get up. I felt like I'd broken my spine. I may have not been in one piece.

"What do you even see in Misty?" she asked.

We're just alike, I thought, but it wasn't any of her business. "Back off, Rand. I can't believe you just tried to kill me."

"Oh, I'm sorry. How's the pain?" she asked.

"I think I'm going to have to report you to the police for attempted murder," I answered.

"I didn't see anything. And did anyone else? No." She feigned innocence.

I could swear I heard a cracking in my back, or it was just my imagination. It wasn't hurting much then so I didn't care much but that still concerned me.

Rand cocked her head. "You OK there?"

"I'm fine," I snapped.

"You sure?"

"Positive."

"Well I have a little something planned...," she said. "Whatever it is between you and Misty won't last long."

"What...do you mean?"

"I won't tell you," she said. "But you'll be sorry for sure, and you'll beg for mercy. And so will Misty."

"You're jealous," I said. Not a question.

"Mad is more like it."

"Look, I don't care what kind of game you're playing. I won't let you hurt Misty or get in our way."
