Saturday morning I woke up to the sound of sobbing. I rubbed my eyes groggily and glanced at the clock - 6:58.
Seriously?
Today was supposed to be my sleep in day.
I went downstairs in my PJ's and bunny slippers. I followed the sound to the kitchen. "Dad?" I said. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?"
Max came down as well. "What's going on?"
"Don't ask me," I said.
Dad held his phone in his hand, which was trembling. I'd never seen him cry like that before.
"Dad." I was really worried now. "Dad! Hello? What happened?"
"Did someone die?" said Max. He normally said that as a joke, but this time, I realized I could have taken it literally.
Mikey came running into the kitchen. "You guys are so loud. Is someone throwing a wild party? Why's dad crying?"
Dad took a shaky breath. "OK, there's no easy way to say this but...Aunt Vivian just called. Mom passed away flying a plane to London. I know this is a lot to take in. I'm very sorry."
It took a second for what he said to hit me, and when it did, it registered in my heart and mind. Oh my God. "That's not fair." My floodgates opened. I started crying. Hard.
Max hugged me from behind.
"I'm really sorry, Mizz Bizz," said dad.
It hurt so much.
"How did that happen?" asked Mikey, and I can swear he was crying too.
"Bad weather," answered dad. "Wind shear. The rapid changes in wind currents caused the plane to go low on power and have insufficient time to accelerate during landing."
"But she hasn't visited in so long and she's just gone like that?" said Max, sounding more angry than sad.
"It's a lot of grief for all of us, I know," said dad. "But the funeral will be held at the graveside West of Beachville. We will head down there in a few days."
"It's not fair," I repeated, my voice hard as stone.
I headed to my room and let my tears run free in a cascade. I used a whole box of tissues and cried a million tears.
I tried to pretend like it was all a dream, like it never happened, but the pain still swelled in my chest. I wanted to believe that dad was lying. He was lying; he was lying; he was lying. But no. Something told me he wasn't.
I wanted to fall into a hole and disappear.
Shatter into pieces.
There was no way mom died flying a plane. She was such a good pilot.
My world crumbled beneath me, sending me into a bottomless pit.
I soaked up all my tissues, and they were all scattered on my bed.
Max came into my room and sat on my bed next to me. His eyes were glassy.
"It's OK," he said softly.
I wanted to shout, No! It's not OK! Mom dying is not OK!
But what did it matter?
Mom was dead regardless.
He handed me another box of tissues and I blew my nose. I felt him wrap his arms around me, consoling me. Then, like a good big brother, he let me cry in his arms for a long, long time. By the time I was done crying for what seemed like hours, I felt wrung dry.
It was only until that afternoon Max and I noticed that sitting on the ledge above the chimney was a picture of mom and him and me. In the picture, mom was in the middle, her arms around me and Max. Max's smile back then was lopsided, wider on the left, which made him look so cute. Mom and I had identical smiles - wide and generous. We also had the same wrinkles under our eyes.
"Mom was beautiful," mentioned Max.
"She still is," I said, my voice breaking. "She still is." The second time I said it softer.
I could tell he knew what I meant. Even though mom was gone, she was still in our hearts. I could feel it; I could feel mom's soul, so close to me. That would never change.
hope you're doing amazing, readers. also this is the saddest chapter of the book ever 😢
