MISTY'S POV
"Why are your eyes all puffed up?" Kendall asked me during lunch.
"My mom died," I replied bluntly. I could still feel the pain in my heart. When I said this, I suddenly envied Kendall for having such a happy family.
"I forgot what your mom was like," said Kendall. "I rarely saw her."
"Yeah, well I remember everything about her and how close I was to her," I said. "Until this year."
"It's OK to be very sad," said Kendall.
"I'm sorry, Misty," said Sandy. "I understand how you feel."
I was mad for a second. How could she possibly understand my feelings? But then I realized she did understand with what happened to her dad; she understood how I felt more than anyone I knew.
I felt like I would start crying again if I said anything else, so I didn't say anything. My floodgates were so fragile at that moment, I couldn't even touch them.
I grabbed a sandwich and an apple from the lunch bar as my friends and I paid. I reached into my pockets only to find a couple of one-dollar bills and some loose change.
I didn't have enough.
I slid my lunch tray to the cashier. "Not enough money."
She nodded apologetically.
"I'm not hungry anyway," I shrugged.
Someone from behind me slid a five dollar bill over to me and I turned to see who it was - Rick. "I'll pay for her."
I opened my mouth to speak.
"Don't argue," Rick spoke before I could.
"Rick, take it back," I said. "Thanks, but no thanks."
"It's OK," he said. "Just pay me back when you can."
"No, I'm -"
"Just take it," he said. "I'll pay for her," he said to the cashier.
The cashier nodded.
I picked up my tray and turned to Rick. "You didn't have to do that."
"You're welcome," he said smugly.
"Thanks," I said, making a mental note that I would have to pay him back.
"What was that all about?" asked Sandy.
"Yeah and since when was Rick nice to you? Or anyone at all?" added Kendall.
"Maybe he's changed," I said. "I think Rand's the real issue."
Rick smirked at me. "Hey Misty, I need my jacket."
"OK. Yeah. Sure. I'll go get it." I placed my lunch tray on my table. He was smirking at me.
Weird.
He followed me to my locker. I opened my locker and grabbed his jacket from my locker and handed it to him.
He planted a kiss on my head. "Thanks, muffin."
I smiled to myself. "You're so cheesy."
"I love cheese," he replied.
"Have you been studying for finals?" I asked. "That way, you wouldn't need to cheat off of me to pass."
"I have," he nodded.
"Cool beans. Just please don't copy my answers."
"I won't, but Rand will. She's already got that planned. She asked me to threaten you first so that she could copy you as well."
"That sounds like Rand. It's OK. Cheaters never win."
"She's a cheater, alright," he said. "A total cheater." There was something about the way he said it. An edge to his voice.
"What do you mean?"
"She cheated on me."
"What?"
"I saw her hooked up with Conrad Capell at the gym."
"Shocker," I deadpanned. "Not, actually."
"It's OK now, because I have you." He grabbed my wrist and pecked the back of my hand.
I felt my stomach erupting with butterflies again. "OK, enough kisses for now. We'll get in trouble for public displays of affection."
"Yes ma'am."
"And don't ma'am me either." I rolled my eyes. I swear I would've seen my brain back there.
"Fair enough. Oh, crap. Speak of the devil."
I turned around to see Rand walking toward us.
I was scared she suspected there was something going on between me and Rick.
"Hi Misty," she smiled at me, sickly sweet. "I need to talk to Ricky right now, hun. Do you mind for a minute?"
"Sure," I said. I stepped aside. "I'll go eat lunch now."
I left, leaving Rick with Rand. Rand apparently still wanted to speak to Rick even after they split. I didn't want to eavesdrop on them despite my curiosity, so I just headed to the cafeteria to eat. Inside, it was loud and bustling and smelly, but for some reason I liked it. I was starving for the first time in days.
