yeah there was barely rini this season but they still made an impact,,, at least for me.
the last episode had me shook;; i was expecting a rini moment,,, but how they did it surprised me.
in a season where nini and rini is supposed to be out of the way,,, they capitalized on the emotional connection between two characters whose relationship we're supposed to forget.
exhibit a: "nini's here?"
"it's one line why are you crying over it"
no bc that one line had the most emotion ricky showed in the entire season??? it's not even an exaggeration lmao
tho he cried in episode 6,,, it didn't hit hard at all bc the show played that off as a joke with jet making fun of ricky and ricky going along with it. it didn't rly feel like anything serious.
but when ashlyn says,, "did everyone get a card from nini?" in episode 8...

ricky finally says nini's name out of shock that she's there. on his birthday. on opening night. he fully expected her to be absent that he didn't even think of the possibility of her showing up,,, not even when big red came. we know they haven't talked in a long time just by how he talks about her in episode 6.
unlike most of the love triangle moments this season that were played off as funny romcom tropes and petty drama,,, this was a moment that felt like it meant smth. it's not fans being delusional - it's the show taking the effort to focus on ricky's face,, to linger on him as if there is smth we're supposed to understand here. josh's line delivery and the way his eyes light up is... crazy.
they could have made ricky be normally excited about her coming with him saying "she's here?" with a casual smile or laugh. it would have been cute,,, but the intention of the scene would have been clear: they're on good terms,,, nothing more nothing less. instead they chose for him to have that look on his face and to have that tone of voice. to capitalize on opening night drama? most likely. but by the way the camera stays on his face for longer than it should have,,, yeah you can't rly say it meant nothing.
exhibit b: kristoff's lullaby
yk what was interesting about this scene??? how the show made it incredibly vague and open to interpretation.
no yeah in the episode's story,,, it's supposed to be about gina. he glances at her once in the song and ig that's what makes it about her. there's no arguing there.
but how everything was set-up did not make the scene as a whole clear.
