in honor of the release of the s4 first look,, here's my thoughts on s3 rina that i forgot to publish LMAO
oh, rina. how you failed when you were needed most.
i'm disappointed in the writers for ruining them in s3,,, but i'm most disappointed in the genre of fans who settled for a parody of s1 for their ship's love story. were the standards that low?????
but ofc,,, everything here is my opinion lmao so don't take it too seriously. i want to get this straight: i don't hate rina. i hate how they were dealt with.
i liked rina. they were my second favorite ship on the show bc i loved their friendship and i liked the tropes they hit,,, their tension in the first half of s2 was smth i liked. i didn't see them as endgame but i liked them well enough to consider the relationship. ((lmao if you need proof just read old s2 chapters)).
then s3 happened and,,, boy how can i start?
re-using rini's s1 storyline was a big mistake imo. the entire,, "there's still smth between them! there's a past, there's history!" is a weird way to approach rina when they've always had their own thing going on. they could have gone for the girl falls first, boy falls harder trope without re-using the love triangle with ej,,, and making ej the bad guy.
and it's not just the storyline,,, it's the actual scenes that make up the story. they remake scenes like ricky looking at gina during the table reading,,, ricky and ej fighting,,, ricky and gina looking at each other in the circle before the show starts in the finale... and all of these remade scenes are lesser quality versions of the ones in s1. can't rina have their OWN scenes like in previous seasons,, not reused rini ones?

ricky's feelings for gina was handled poorly too. they become friends again and all of a sudden he likes her? boy how convenient for the drama!! no build-up at all. they just become friends again in episode 2,,, and then episode 3 we're supposed to think they're flirting,,, then episode 4 ricky's jealous, all in a matter of days. nothing especially noteworthy even happens in these days that would explain the feelings. you can't even tell me that the past seasons served as a build-up bc they stopped being friends midway s2. whatever feelings ricky MIGHT have had for gina in s1 were never strong to begin with. what's worse??? oh,,, how ricky's feelings are still questionable by the end of the entire season bc it's not he who admits he likes her,,, it's gina who admits she likes him. ricky's feelings for gina amounts to a shallow high school summer fling,,, and that's bc how he developed these feelings was poorly written - in fact,,, it wasn't written at all. he just liked her one day and that's that on that ig.
