The girls went out onto the field to warm up. They did some starting stretches before running some laps to get the energy and spirits high. The other team came out onto the field, but Alex was far too intrigued and focused on the conversation she was having with Katherine.
"So, my parents are a no show today. they barely woke up to bring me to the school." Katherine said with a sad tone of voice.
"They suck, but you know who is always here to cheer you on?" Alex replied with a soft smile, keeping her jog at the same pace as Katherine's.
"You." She said, bringing her spirits up.
"Yes, me. I hate that your parents don't care, K, but you will always have me in your corner." Alex replied, nudging her gently as they jogged. It knocked her a bit, but nonetheless she smiled.
"Wanna race back?"
"Coach is gonna kick our ass, but I'm gonna beat you!" Alex yelled as she sprinted ahead of Katherine down the field. She laughed as Katherine cursed under her breath and almost caught up.
"You guys! This was a jog, not a sprint!" The coach said with a small laugh. Alex laughed as she collapsed on the ground behind the bench. Katherine laid next to her with a smile.
"You girls better be ready by time the game starts. Go visit your parents for a few minutes so the other team has the field to warm up for a few minutes." Their coach said, referring to everyone. Alex dragged Katherine across the field to where her parents sat so she had somewhere to go.
"Hi, Momma." Alex said, sitting down in front of her.
"Hello, baby. How are you?" She asked, fixing the girl's headband.
"I'm good. Me and Kath raced so now I'm out of breath, but I'm excited to be playing. I think he might put me in as a sub goalie, so I'm a tad nervous, but he says I've been doing well in practice and this is the best way to test it out." Alex replied with a shrug.
"That's good, and how are you Katherine. I noticed your parents aren't here. I assume they aren't gonna show?" She asked sadly. Katherine just shrugged while sipping her water.
"I assume not, they were fighting over taking me. Neither wanted to get up to drive. Luckily, I made it and somehow before Alex." She laughed.
"I had a late start, I slept through my first three alarms." Alex laughed.
"That she did, we could hear it from our room." Her father laughed.
"Well, we'll cheer you on like always. Would you like to join us for lunch afterwards? I'm sure you'll be hungry by then and we have some extra room in the car." Her mother offered.
"Are you sure it's okay?" Katherine asked, looking between Alex and her parents.
"Yes, please join us." Alex said with a smile.
"Alright, alright." She said with a smile before their coach called everyone together. She bid a goodbye to her parents and Lily before running across the field with Katherine. Both of the teams were coed, meaning both were boy and girl team mixed. They hadn't gotten enough players to sign up this year, but had enough for a large enough singular team.
"Alright, first quarter is going to be a normal setup. Katherine in goal, Ava and Ashlyn as left and right defenders, Kate as middle defender. Ashton you're center back, Micheal and Jay as right and left wing, Alex you're going to be center field. You all know how to play. Don't worry about winning, just go out there and have fun. It'd be nice to keep our running streak though, so try your hardest." He said with a small wink. The captain and co-captian were sent out and Alex's team lost the coin toss. Though it wasn't a big deal, they chose the side they wanted to play on first half and Alex's team started with the ball.
The teams lined up and the first thing Alex saw when she looked up from the ball was a brunette fluffy haired boy. She didn't let her focus go though and as soon as the whistle blew she took off, running down the field with the ball in her control. She saw another male start at her so she looked for her first open teammate who happed to be Micheal.
"Yeah! Good pass Alex!" Katherine yelled down the field. She smiled and ran ahead of the ball in case Micheal needed any assistance. Unfortunately, Micheal hadn't noticed the person standing front of him and got the ball swiped.
"It's all good Micheal! Nice hustle!" Alex yelled, running down the field to catch the ball. She reached him in time, swiping the ball back and taking back down the field. She faked a few people out, reaching defense pretty quickly again. Her breath was gone, but her stamina was still there.
"Jay get up here!" She said, leading into their normal takeout play. Jay ran up the field, most people running towards her and who they assumed was Jay. They would be correct and left Micheal in the open, walking down the field as if he was already worn out. She slipped the ball behind her before turning and kicking it to Micheal.
"Nice fake." She heard behind her. She turned around and saw the brunette boy from the start of the quarter smiling at her.
"yeah, I know." She replied, running down into the defensive line's box for an open shot. Micheal tried passing it to her but he was bombarded by people and it went out of bounds at the other team's hand instead. She ran over to throw it into bounds, high fiving him along the way.
"Sorry, Lex." He apologized.
"Nah, don't worry about it. We're just getting started, Mike." She said with a smile. He smiled back and got into position. She analyzed the play. She could throw to Jay who was close enough to make it in, but being that close he had five people on him. If she threw to Micheal, he'd get bombarded again. She could throw over everyone's heads to Ashton, throw them off guard as he was so far back, and then run up to an open position to get the ball back. She caught Ashton's eyes and he nodded softly before she scanned around, not letting anyone catch onto her plan.
Alex stepped back and threw the ball to Ashton with power, letting it soar over everyone's heads and he kneed it to let it get to the ground. She sprinted onto the field and he passed it to her. She was close enough to take the shot, so she did. The whistle blew and the words Goal were all she heard.
"YEAH ALEX!" Katherine screamed down the field as she ran back to her side of the field with a smile.
