5.3 playing with fire

Resa sits behind the desk in the bedroom of her and Eli. Eli is gone for the day to hang out with Miguel and Demetri leaving her alone at home.

It's already late in the day and there's knocking on the front door. Resa doesn't get up and keeps working on her drawing on Eli's iPad. "Rees! It's for you!" Eli's mom yells.

She sighs getting up, she's wearing a cropped hoodie with shorts. She walks out of the bedroom up the stairs and into the living room. She's shocked to see Johnny standing there with his hands in his pockets.

"Hey, Rees," he pauses for a minute, "I need your help," he sighs.

She frowns and walks over to him, "sure. What's up?" She asks.

"Carmen is probably pregnant," he says looking down.

Resa is shocked at first then she nods. "Okay, so..." she lets out an angry chuckle as tears form in her eyes, "I have a miscarriage and you have a baby. You sure, you want a baby. You've sucked in the 17 years I've been here! You couldn't even do my hair! I looked like a boy until I went to middle school because my teacher took pitty on me! You're a bad dad and you don't deserve another kid!" She yells as Eli walks into the house.

"Rees..." Johnny starts walking in.

"Fuck you! Fuck you and your baby!" She yells before walking past him and leaving the house slamming the door behind her so hard the prom picture of her and Eli falls from the wall.

She goes to the beach on her bike. She runs to the water and kicks some sand into it. "Fucking bullshit!" She screams with tears falling from her cheeks.

She stands there for a while looking at the water as thoughts take over her mind. She starts walking into it until she's in it with her waist.

She lets herself go under it but doesn't come up. Eli and Miguel arrive just in time to see her go under. Eli waists no time in running into the the water.

He pulls her up making her gasp for air. "You trying to kill yourself?" He yells grabbing her face.

"Leave me alone," she says pushing him away and walking to the sand where Miguel waits for them.

He puts a towel around her shoulders and looks at her as she walks away along the water while Eli comes out of the water. "What happened?" Miguel asks.

"All I know is that she was screaming at her dad before running out of the house," Eli says taking off his wet shoes and socks.

"You wanna go talk to her?" Miguel asks looking at the girl that kicks off her shoes and throws them into the water with an angry scream.

"Nah, I think I'm gonna fish her shoes out of the water," Eli says with a sigh.

"Good idea, I'll make sure she doesn't try to drown herself again," Miguel says as Eli walks off to the water.

Resa sits down on a rock shivering under the blanket. After two hours of watching her and just sitting in the sand Eli walks over to her. "You wanna talk about it?" He asks feeling bad as he notices that she's still crying.

"How come..." her voice breaks, "how come he, a man who neglected his daughter and son, get to have another kid while I lose my baby?" She cries not looking at him while tears still fall.

Eli nods climbing onto the rock and sitting next her. "It's not fair," he says hugging her.

"I don't understand it. What's the plan? What am I supposed to do with my life? I have no money, I don't have good parents. I taught myself everything I know. I don't understand the plan here," she says moving her hands aggressively as she talks.

"I think that's just what you have to figure out along the way," he says pulling her into him.

She looks at him and nods wiping away her tears. "As long as it's with you," she says laying her head on his shoulder.

"I'll never leave you," he says softly kissing her head.
