"Dad! Get out of bed! You have to go to work!" Theresa yells banging on the door of her father.
A groan and a bang indicates he's up and she goes to her work. When her parents divorced they each got custody of one kid. Her brother chose their mom leaving her to her dad.
She goes to her bike and a boy walks over to her. "Hi, I'm Miguel," he smiles.
"Okay," she says with a frown.
"You live here?" He asks trying to be kind.
"No, I just broke in last night and walked out of the door like it's nothing," she says rolling her eyes as her dad walks out.
"He your dad?" Miguel asks.
"Sadly yes," she sighs starting her bike and riding off putting her helmet on.
She stops by a grocery store where she starts working as a cashier. Eventually a boy with a cleft lip and his mom walk in. He smiles at her as she looks up but blushes and continues walking in.
When they come to the register and she starts scanning he's still shy and blushing. "Hey, Resa. How's your dad?" His mother asks.
"Hey, ma'am. He's...been better," she sighs looking at Eli.
"Hey, Resa," he smiles shyly.
"Hey," she smiles blushing slightly.
He blushes ten times worse then before as his mother pays. He leaves with her waving at Theresa. That's been her summer routine, get up, go to work, come home and eat dinner in her bedroom.
When she gets home she's alone so she goes to bed early. The next morning she wakes up by knocking on her door. "Get up, Theresa!" Her grandfather yells.
She frowns jumping off her bed and opening the door. "Sid?" She asks looking at him.
"Get dressed, eat breakfast and go to work," he says walking away to the living room.
She sighs as she starts getting dressed. "Where's my dad?" She asks loudly.
"Jail!" He answers in the same tone.
She walks out tying her hair. "For what?" She asks as she grabs breakfast.
"Don't matter. How about you come live with me?" He asks with raised eyebrow.
"What about dad?" She asks worried.
"He's pulling you down with him. You're smart and motivated. I can get you through high school and in a good college afterwards. Get you out of this fucking shit hole," he says loudly looking at her terrible breakfast.
"Can I think about it? Maybe a few days in the week?" She asks finishing her food.
"Four days in the week? Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday," he smiles proudly.
"He won't like it though," she sighs putting her plate away.
"When was the last time you saw him?" He asks.
"Yesterday," she says.
"Lair," he says as she leaves the house.
"See you tonight," she sighs closing the door behind her.
After work she walks out and sees Sid standing by her bike. "Rhonda packed your shit. I'm not letting my granddaughter live with that shithead any longer," he says before leaving with her.
That's how her life begins again, moving in with her grandfather that probably live to the end of her high school career.
