To clear my head I went for a drive. A lot of things had been going on in my life recently. Everything was stressing me out a lot. So I just had to get away from everything. Eventually I reached a kind of popular overlook. It overlooked the small town I live in. But I didn't go there to gaze at the town below. I was more interested in the moon and stars. They inky black sky was void of any kind of cloud cover. So the bright full moon and stars were clearly visible.
You didn't even need a flashlight to see around you. It was quiet; the only noise was coming from the crickets. I could hear an owl hooting in the distance. The nice was a little cool, but surprisingly warm for November. A slight breeze rustled the fallen leaves. I was sitting on the hood of my car to take everything in. As I looked up at the sky I spotted a few constellations. I took a deep breath and exhaled. The smell of spruce pine filling my lungs.
I was completely relaxed, and didn't have a though in my head. I had achieved my goal. I didn't have any worried plaguing my mind. Although I knew it would only be temporary. The sound of a twig breaking caught my attention. I wondered what kind of animal was lurking in the darkness. Maybe it was a deer, a coyote, or maybe even a fox. There was always a possibility that it was a bear or bobcat. Or even another person. I sat there looking the direction of the noise.
I could hear it coming closer and closer. Whatever it was had been in the darkness of the pine trees. Pine trees can block out even the brightest daylight sometimes. When the noise stopped I saw a figure come out into the open. To my surprise it was man. "It's a lovely night isn't it?" I asked them. Hoping that they would be less threatened by conversation. Although the presence of another human made me a little nervous. Especially since you never knew someone's intentions. "Y/n, is that you?" I heard a familiar voice.
"Daniel?" I asked. "Yeah, hey! I... I didn't expect anyone to be out here." He said awkwardly. "Neither did I." I replied with a laugh. He walked over and I noticed he was a little disheveled. There was a wild look on his big brown eyes. He and I had been friends for a long time. And I could tell there was something off about him. I just wasn't able to pinpoint what it was. "You should probably head home. It's getting late... it's almost midnight." He said. I checked the time on my phone and he was right.
It was 11:59pm. Suddenly he let out a groan of agony. He basically collapsed onto a large rock close by. "Hey, are you okay? Do you need me to call for help?" I said as I got up and walked over to him. "No! No, they can't help me. Get back! Please! I don't want to hurt you!" He said, and I was very confused. "What do you mean? What's wrong?" I asked with furrowed brows. The church clock in town started chiming. It was officially midnight. Daniel screamed in agony. His bones were cracking sickeningly loud.
His clothes were ripping as his body started changing... transforming. Panic rushed through me as I realized what was happening. My best friend was turning into a werewolf. There was nothing I or anyone else could do to help him. I quickly got into my car and sped off. I was positive that I was breaking the speed limit. Hopefully there wasn't a cop on patrol or something. Once the overlook was a good distance behind me, I finally slowed down.
I was in shock. Werewolves were supposed to be fictional! They're only supposed to exist in books and movies. But I guess that wasn't the case. I was having a difficult time processing all of what I had seen. But his secret was safe with me. Even if he is a werewolf, he'd my best friend. And I wasn't going to betray his trust. No matter what.
