The ticking of a grandfather clock and soft snoring filled the silent room. A man with dark hair was sitting at his desk. His head laying across an open book; He's fast asleep. The quiet night was violently disturbed by a sharp crack of thunder. It starteled the sleeping man. Disoriented, he ran a hand through his hair before rubbing his eyes.
He lets out a deep sigh as he comes to his senses. Once again, he has stayed late at the institute and fell asleep while working. Pulling his watch out of his waistcoat pocket he noticed that it was three in the morning. A bright flash of lightning illuminated the room, followed by a loud rumbel of thunder. It was so powerful that it rattled the windows.
Concern for the children that stay at the institute came to mind. He desperately hoped his employees were doing a good job of comforting the boys and girls in their time of need. Just to make sure he decided to go up and check on them. As he did so there was another streak of lightning. When the room lit up with a blue like glow, he noticed a child standing in the doorway, but this wasn't an ordinary child.
He or she was wearing a white sheet with holes cut out for eyes. Dr. Kreizler smiled softly and pretended not to see the child. As he stood up he hoped for another flash of lightning, and he got his wish as he walked towards the doorway. He gasped in fake horror as well as staggering back slightly. His dramatic display got the reaction he was hoping for. The giggle of a little girl emited from the sheet ghost, causing him to smile.
"Wait a minute. You aren't a ghoulish ghost," He said as he aproached the child. "You're just a little girl." He said before pulling the sheet off of her. She covered her mouth as she giggled and he gently ruffled her hair before crouching down. Now that he was eye level the little girl removed her hands to reveal a small smile. "Did I really scare you?" She asked in a sweet voice.
"Absolutely! Didn't you see? I almost fell backwards in sheer terror." He said even though the smile still remained on his handsome face. "I didn't mean to scare you that much." She said before wrapping her little arms around his neck. Hugging him as if to say that she was sorry. He gently wrapped his good arm around the little girl's shoulders. The two of then stayed like that for a few moments before he broke the silence.
"Come on, let's get you back to bed." He said softly. They broke the hug before he stood up and walked the girl back to her dormitory. Once there she climbed into her bed and he gently tucked her in. "Good night Dr. Kreizler." She said through a little yawn. "Good night, Claire." He spoke softly before leaving the room and heading back downstairs. The doctor wasn't able to prevent the smile that was on his face as he sat down at his desk. Nor could he ignore the warmth that enveloped his insides.
