After hitting the end-call button on the screen of my phone, I was frozen with uncertainty and bewilderment. What had he done that could be so bad to the point that his mother had to call me herself? If he did something unforgivable, it would be my fault. What if he hurt someone or even himself? What if the result would be detrimental? How would I be able to function knowing that I'd be the cause of that?I scanned the kitchen and found that Christian was no longer in the room, he had grabbed his food and made his way to the patio to have breakfast there. It hurt me that he was so disappointed to the point where he couldn't even look at me. Was I supposed to tell him what Lindsay just told me? He might be upset with us, but we were still his family...or should I say, family and friend? There was no way he would know that Chase was in trouble and wouldn't be concerned, even after what happened.
Even though I wanted to desperately try to get his attention, I realized there must've been a reason she only called me and asked for me to come over and not the both of us. But how was I going to get there? He surely wouldn't give me a ride and Sierra was also in no place to take me anywhere either. My only other option was Emma, but she lived twenty minutes away and I didn't want to bother her after she already went out of her way to help me last night.
I decided that it was in my best interest to just call an Uber. I rushed up to my room to get myself ready. After brushing my teeth, I changed into some jeans and a tank top. I pulled on a navy cardigan and some sneakers before prancing back down the stairs to await the taxi in the driveway.
As I scurried through my thoughts, I kicked at a few pebbles that sat on the asphalt. I had no idea what to expect, or how to even approach him. Lindsay had never found the need to contact me regarding Chase before, he always called me himself whenever he needed me, so I was becoming more and more worried with every second that passed.
When the Uber dropped me at Chase's house, I slowly walked up the walkway while hugging my cardigan around my torso. I looked down at the welcome mat that sat in front of the tall mahogany door, my hand hovered over the doorknob as I built up the courage to turn it. Pushing the door open, the first thing I was greeted with was a loud thud.
"Get the fuck out!" Chase's yelling almost knocked my breath out of me when I stepped around the wall and into the living room. He was standing at the top of the stairs, tossing things.
"Chase, honey you need to calm down," I heard Lindsay speak in a rushed, yet quiet tone. I turned around to see that Jack was standing behind her, holding an ice pack above his eyes. He towered over her, and a menacing scowl was plastered to his face.
"Chloe, thank God you're here," she took quick steps over to me. I observed her appearance and was surprised by how she still managed to look well put together despite the chaos that was taking place around her. Her hair was in a high ponytail and her bright eyes were alert yet worrisome.
"What's happening?" I whispered when she reached me.
"Last night was the first time Chase saw Jack since he got back from New Hampshire and he, well... hit him."
"What?" I asked, my jaw hanging. Chase hit his stepfather?
She nodded and wiped the back of her hand over her forehead. "Yeah, and when he woke up this morning and saw that he was still here, he hit him again."
"Are you going to make me have to come back down there to finish what I started?" He yelled again.
"Why would he do that?" I asked his mother again, bringing my hand to cover my mouth.
"Chase and Jack don't have the best relationship," she told me as she pinched the bridge of her nose. "I have been trying to calm him down but he's just so, angry. I haven't seen him this angry in a while."
