Before I could stop myself, I was spinning on my heels and making my way back towards the front door. Just when I was beginning to accept what he did, he decided to pull another unreasonable stunt. How could he do this? What kind of game was he playing? He and I clearly had different intentions."Chloe?" I winced as Lindsay called my name while I was rounding the corner to the living room. I was hoping that I could leave unseen, but that didn't work out.
I stopped in my tracks and sighed a shaky breath as I realized that everyone was now aware of my presence. I didn't even know what I planned on doing after walking out the door anyway, it wasn't like I brought myself there. And to make matters worse, I just found out that I was pregnant with his child, it wasn't like I could just walk away anymore. Well, I technically could but I wouldn't be able to do it with zero complications.
"Come join us for dinner, there's plenty to share!" Lindsay threw at me again. I decided to swallow my pride and try my best to plaster on my best fake smile. Turning back around, I slowly walked back to the kitchen.
I tried everything in me to avoid Chase's eyes and to ignore the stare that Yanique was holding on me. I didn't look in her direction but I could tell that she was no longer smiling.
"Hi," my voice came out in a higher pitch than I intended and I tried covering it up by clearing my throat after.
"Do you need some water honey? You look like you might be sick." Lindsay placed her hand on my shoulder and studied me with furrowed brows.
"Uh, no. I'm okay," I lied and looked down at my feet.
"Have a cinnamon roll, some sugar will perk you right up." She proceeded to grab a plate and scooped a rich looking cinnamon roll onto it before placing it on a table mat right next to Chase.
I didn't have the heart to refuse it, even though I felt like I could throw up at any second. One, because of the nausea that finally made sense, and two, because of the situation that I was just placed in.
I pulled the chair out next to Chase and before I sat on it, I pulled it a few inches to the left, away from him. I sat and placed my hands into my lap as Lindsay prepared a plate of meatloaf and potatoes for me.
"Chloe," Chase called under his breath and I shook my head.
"Don't." I turned my head away from him.
"I wasn't expecting to see you here, Chloe," Yanique spoke before dabbing the corners of her mouth with a napkin.
When I looked up at her, she smirked before talking again. "But it's great to see you."
I noticed when Chase's head snapped up in her direction but I couldn't see the expression on his face. However, her smile faded when he did.
"Right back at you," I responded blankly and used my fork to toy with the desert in front of me.
"I don't think we've all had dinner before," Lindsay pointed out as she made her way back to the table. "I don't think I've ever had both Chloe and Yanique over at the same time," she chuckled to herself.
"You're right, that is kind of strange," Yanique added and Lindsay placed a plate full of food in front of me.
"What have you been up to lately, Chloe?" Lindsay asked right before spooning potatoes into her mouth.
Oh nothing, just sleeping with your son who happened to have been leading me on the whole time.
"Nothing out of the usual," I answered after a few seconds of awkward silence.
"I heard that you got a job at Adam's Medical Center, that's exciting."
Right, with everything else going on I actually sort of forgot about that. "Yeah, I am excited," I chimed even though my heart felt like it was slowly being chipped away by the sight next to me.
