Rosevalley public High School is located in centre of town next to a larger park. It's a medium-sized school where basketball and hockey are most popular. On the other hand, they hold an annual battle between school bands about who should be the band to perform at Christmas prom each year. Becca's band, which changes names as often as I change socks, used to compete, and had ended up second last year.
As I thought, I left Hookhill around 7:30pm. There was a lot of traffic on the main road, and I had to drive in full speed to make it to see Becca's band perform. It had felt somewhat awkward to go into the gymnasium to watch the spectacle since I wasn't a student. But I knew that Becca appreciated my emotional support.
She's the singer and front person and has greater stage fright than she dares to admit. But there is nothing visible in her when she stands there at the mic and sings the songs she wrote with the others. If they are good... At least they don't suck! She has an amazing voice though, and I hope she will get far in life.
"Ryan!"
"Bec!" She happily threw herself around my neck and I spun her in circles while we both laughed. "Congratulations!"
"Thank you. Isn't it amazing?! It was our last chance to perform at the Christmas prom, and we won!"
"I never stopped believe in you! Um... all of you." I glanced at her bandmates standing behind her with arms crossed. "Congratulations to everyone."
"Thanks."
I've never liked Leo. Leo is the guy who made my sister start stealing and doing stupid things. He's the one who convinces her and manipulates her. An ugly fish! He's the guitarist in the band but also Becca's boyfriend occasionally, when he seems to feel like it.
Becca has said that it isn't official, but that they have some fun on the way. I try to tell her how she's too young for fun, but then she counters with how I hooked up with one of the jocks in a closet during my last year of high school.
"Are you ready to go?" I asked when I finally let go of her. She beamed at me.
"Yes! But surely it's okay if the others join?" No! No, definitely not!
"Sure," I muttered, raising one shoulder in a tired shrug. "But I won't pay for them."
"No, of course not," Becca rolled her eyes at me, smiling back at the others. "But it's worth celebrating with the whole band!"
"I can leave you alone if you want. We can see each other another time if you want to hang out with your friends instead." Please say yes!
"No."
"Exactly, no!" Leo suddenly bursts, pushing his way up to me. "We all want to hear how you helped Becca in the woods." His smug grin made me cringe, that little fucker.
Becca went with me on my scooter while the others went in Leo's car to the hamburger restaurant with a 50's theme that was just a few blocks away. I let her wear the helmet, taking my brotherly responsibility seriously. When we parked, the others had already arrived and hurried inside. When we got off the scooter, Becca gave me a troubled look as she handed me the helmet."What?"
"I know you don't like them."
"You are absolutely right about that! I don't think they are good for you."
"You just don't understand."
"It's a little hard to understand how someone who firstly steals occasionally and secondly steals a fucking Jaguar from town's richest man isn't bad! How can't you see what your friendship with them is doing to you? I think I am a living proof of the consequences of your actions!"
