I lay huddled against the ground, eyes fixed on my prey. Unaware that I was there, he sat with his back turned to me. He didn't know how close to danger he really was. How close to death!

If it were possible, I would have smiled a smug smile, knowing how I had the upper hand. My tail swung soundlessly behind me as I prepared to take charge. The element of surprise was important, Reed had said so. We usually hunt in pack like normal wolves, but shifters are bigger and can hunt bigger animals alone more easily than the normal wolf.

I slowly crept closer, considering whether I would be able to pounce on my prey from this distance. I giggled in my mind, amused to myself. Mike should see my sassy huntingness! I was almost superior, born for this stuff!

My prey wiggled an ear slightly and I crouched as close to the ground as possible. He looked around but didn't get up. Now... Now was the time.

Reed said that you should wait for the right moment, look for weaknesses in the prey. But don't wait too long to let the opportunity slip away. I took a few cautious steps before taking the leap and attacking.

"Got you!"

But the prey dodged before I even let my paws leave the ground and the next moment I was pinned on the ground with a big black wolf pressing his paws against my chest. I yowled in surprise before licking his nose.

"You heard me?!"

"Only a lot," Reed replied, nuzzling my nose before stepping off me. I rolled up, lying on my stomach.

"I snuck up on you just like you said!"

"You're breathing way too hard, my love. Try to relax. And your thoughts are waaay to loud. Shut them out."

"I was relaxed!" I muttered, sitting up. "I was badass!"

"Like the young shifters, you still have much to learn. Remember, this is only your first time trying."

"I have a feeling I'm going to catch some really juicy prey!" I snickered mischievously.

"I'm glad you're optimistic," he answered.

"What a diplomatic answer!" I tugged on his ear. "You don't think I can handle it!"

"You have to ground yourself and let go of everything but the hunt." Reed crouched in front of me, moving the toes on his paws. "Feel the earth under your paws so it doesn't shift and make a noise, clean out your mind from giggles and such and let the sounds of the forest disperse. Look for that promising trail you picked up." He closed his eyes, wiggled one ear slightly as he sniffed. "A wolf's nose is a hundred times more sensitive than humans', and we shifters have even more sensitive noses."

"Like two hundred times more?"

"At least a hundred and fifty. You need to practice finding a good lead."

"I found you!"

"I'm not the best example since your whole being wants to find me."

"You should try with me!" We both looked up as Alex came trotting out of the trees. "Try to find me and catch me if you can!" she blinked at me before she took off in a flash of silver and grey.

We were out in the reserve. It had been a few days since I agreed to give this whole alphamega thing a chance and we had spent as much time as we could in wolf form.

I was still emotional, and I had moments when I was feeling low. But the heavy anxiety eased, and I realized that Reed was right all along. He didn't want to hurt me, and much was the same as before; between us. Still a lot had changed.
