Reed parked the car on the street before stepping out into the sunlight. He took off his Ray-Ban and placed them in his breast pocket. His black shirt sat tightly around his strong muscles, and I think both me and my sisters, possibly mom as well, drooled over him when he rounded the car and came up to us.
"Thank you mam, for letting me stay here with you guys today." He extends his hand politely to mom, then Chad and Vendela, introducing himself once again before turning to me with a soft smile.
"Oh, it's alright! But what do we stand here for? Ryan; show Mr. Hook inside!"
"Reed is fine."
"Oh sorry, Reed." Mom giggled somewhat embarrassed and reached for Luka in my arms. I walked tensely toward the patio to introduce Reed to the others.
"Is it okay for you if I'm staying?"
"What do you think!?" I hissed annoyed.
"I... I just wanted to... I'm happy to spend more time with you."
Had this been another occasion I would have felt a rush of happiness and cheered out loud. The risk of me jumping him out of joy would be fucking high! But now I was just bothered. He would see how... how useless I am compared to my family. I don't want him to see what a failure I am compared to the others.
"Sorry," he whispered lowly. "I can go."
"No, it would be even weirder. Now we just have to suffer through this shit together!"
I plastered on my fakest smile whenwe reached the patio. Dad smiled impressed at Reed. Noah looked between us while Becca was red as a tomato in her face. We exchanged glances.
"Hi family, this is my boss, um; Reed Hook."
"Hello, Mr. Hook." Dad took him by the hand. "I'm Mr. Moe. James Moe."
"Hello sir, nice to meet you."
"So, my son works for you now? I overheard some from what you were talking about."
"Yes exactly, he's an asset to the company."
"Good, really good. I was worried he would pick a more unfitting work, so to speak."
"This is my sister Vendela's husband Noah and this is... Becca; my little sister." I ignored dad and Reed greeted them both, pretending how he's never met Becca.
It was an incredibly rigid and embarrassing house tour where the whole family followed me and Reed around. As soon as I tried to describe a room, one of my siblings or mom interrupted to explain why and how the rooms were decorated. It was a bit like taking a rooster to a chicken coop.Vendela and mom didn't hold back on their questions to Reed and asked him about everything from his job, private life to the nature reserve. They had no limits! I usually don't have it either, but now it was rather silly.
"Do you have a partner?" mom asked when we came downstairs again.
Why did she even say partner? She could just have asked him about his girlfriend. I guess he doesn't have anyone since I never meet any. But he dated that fisherman's daughter apparently. And some model.
"No, mam." Oh, great. He didn't have a stable relationship.
"Oh, but have you found someone you like?" Reed just smiled. Indeed, he had. Those fucking girls!
"Mom please; it's enough with your interrogation of him!"
"Okay sorry I won't nag anymore. We were going to light the grill now and play some garden games; you boys want to join in?"
