"As your alpha, do you trust me?"

I wish I had forgotten where I was when I opened my eyes hours later, still hidden under the covers. I wish I could imagine how I woke up in Reed's arms like yesterday morning and how I looked forward to a perfect day of fun with my family and friends. Trouble free, happy... But the truth was too real, and it hurt too much.

With a careful hand I pulled the blanket down from my face to peak out into the room, afraid someone was there. But I was alone. My mouth felt dry, my eyes as well, but when I saw the untouched sandwich and the glass of water on the bedside table, my stomach twisted.

I stumbled out of the high bed, falling to my knees before I made it to the bathroom just in time to throw up. But since I hadn't eaten anything since the morning before, I could hardly get anything up, mostly sat and sobbed, coughing.

A light knock on the bedroom door made me jump to my feet just as Geneviève and Sarah entered the room. I heard them mumble to each other before we almost collided in the doorway to the bathroom. They both bowed reverently before Sarah without asking grabbed my arm to pull me in towards the tub again.

"I don't,"

"We're going to prepare you for your breakfast with your parents, alphamega," Sarah said.

"My parents are back in,"

"Did you get any sleep, honey?" Geneviève interrupted with a warm smile, gently forcing me down in the tub. "Your new haircut suits you." I bit my lip, turning my eyes away. "You didn't eat your sandwich yesterday. Your well-being is of the utmost importance."

"Yet you cut off my hair against my will and forced me here."

"It was for your own good!" Sarah giggled in an attempt to cheer me up as she wet my hair. "You'll realize it one day."

"I hope not," I croaked.

"You sound hoarse. Did you catch a cold yesterday?" Geneviève leaned in to sniff my throat which felt like violating privacy. I flinched away but she just smiled. "I can see how the Hooks after all strengthened your immune system. I catch a faint scent of King's weed and ginger." My lower lip trembled, and I hugged myself. "It's okay honey," she hushed, caressing my cheek.

"No, it isn't," I gasped.

"Remember, adapt and submit," Sarah said while shutting the water off before reaching for a towel. "It is an honour for you as an alphamega."

"What do you as a deltamega know about that?!" I hissed and she looked almost startled. I took the towel from her angrily, glaring at her. "Fuck off!"

"You have to show us respect," she answered somewhat startled, but Geneviève pushed her aside, reaching for the towel.

"Buck said he had a temper, friend," she smiled at Sarah before winking at me. "And he's not the only family brat." Both snickered.

"No, remember when you were his age?"

Once out of the tub and dried, Geneviève helped me pull the long linen shirt over my head. The material felt like a liberation even if it was in the shortest. It covered my crotch and my ass, but barely. Even though I'm used to nudity among shifters, it felt extremely uncomfortable among these people.

"You're frozen, honey. This may be too cold for you when you go outside, but inside you won't freeze. I will give you slippers in sheep's wool though." Geneviève went to the wardrobe to fetch some before kneeling in front of me. "Thor care about his family so he heats up this house year around."

"How come you're not a betamega? I thought an alphas' children usually got... stronger." She slouched slightly, as if I touched a sensitive topic.

"Um..." she sighed. "I was betamega," she said in a breath. I frowned.
