Tongass National Forest, in Alaska. I may not be a globetrotter, but I am still quite well-read on our country considering my interest in books. And how the ring of alphas chose America's largest national park as their home is not so surprising.
But I would have preferred a state in the middle of America that didn't take as long to travel to as the trip from my home to the Royals.
We had both driven and flown for hours before we stayed overnight in a larger cabin in the forest at the foot of the mountain we were climbing today. Thor kept a close eye on me, not leaving me by myself even to go to the bathroom.
Geneviève and Sarah had followed us to the cabin but weren't allowed to follow us the rest of the way since they were deltamegas. But they came to care for me and make sure that my health was good for the more difficult journey into the reserve.
My last healthier days at the Royals when I was no longer bedridden were spent kneeling beside Thor or resting in my room. I wasn't allowed to speak barely once; I wasn't allowed to go out and Dante came to check on me and give me nutrition every day if I didn't eat.
And I admit it, it made me feel less nauseous. But to get nutrition, be quiet and sitting there did nothing because I felt totally devastated.
I never heard if they caught Mr. Sparkles or not. And the uncertainty of whether he survived or not was crushing me. I almost missed him as much as Reed, but maybe precisely because he reminded me of how real my life with Reed had been.
Even though it's only been a few weeks since I was taken from him, it feels like a lifetime ago. And I can't say that it's easy to hold on to the little hope you have when it's constantly being torn away from you.
"We are soon up for the steep, let's continue!" I kept my head down, fought through the deep snow. Thor led us up a larger slope lined with trees and rocks. "We're going through the passage, then we'll be there soon." A gentle puff from a nuzzle in my rump made me jump forward, glancing back.
"Hurry up, alphamega," Ojsadmin said. "We must not fall behind."
"I want you to keep Rhysand in the centre, protect him!" Thor called back.
"Why?!" Ozzy huffed. "Here he is protected by the law of the alphas."
"But there are lawbreakers like Reed around." Reed. Hearing his name made me pick up the pace. I would finally be able to meet my mate again!
"Have you heard anything from the Fangs?" Ozzy asked Thor and I was confused over how they let me listen to their chat. "So that we can get this shit out of the way."
"I talked to him yesterday when we reached the cabin. They are already here and probably waiting on the other side. We are probably among the last."
"Like always," someone snickered.
"Nice people always come last, and they shall wait in the Royals," Thor stated.
When we reached the high, it was like a long passage between rocks that led us deeper into the reserve in an area difficult for people to access. It was like a hidden valley in the centre of the reserve, lined with a lot of dense forest as well as rivers and mountains. It was windless and the snow had already been trampled down by others.I could smell it in the air, other wolves. I stopped and raised my head, sniffing. I tried to catch the scent of him, of Reed. Or anyone in our pack. Would Angus and maybe Otto follow Reed here? I didn't know who followed, but I would be glad to see them all.
"Who are you looking for? You may speak." I looked at Thor who turned to look at me.
"My m-mate," I whined.
