Austin's POV

The second school starts I'm determined to get myself into trouble. But, then again. Getting in trouble always came easily to me.

"Mr. Mahone. Are you listening?" The teacher calls on me. I mentally scoff as I see what's on the board. Quadratics? I can do this with -5% of my brain cells.

"Does it look like I'm fucking listening?" I ask the teacher. I hear multiple gasps, and I see Becky's eyes bulge out of their sockets.

'What are you doing?' She mouthes to me. I smirk.

"What did you say to me, mister?" The teacher asks.

"Are you deaf and dumb?" I ask chuckling, "I said. Does. It. Look. Like. I'm. Fucking. Listening." I say loudly and slowly as if he's an incompetent old man.

"That's it, Mahone! Detention!" He shouts, "Head to the office with your attitude." He booms, but I can't help but burst out laughing as I exit the classroom.

See? I could be the old Austin whenever I wanted to. Trouble comes easy when I'm back to my old ways.

I hear the teacher shouting once again and I'm surprised to see Becky being the one getting yelled at.

"Would you like to join him, Miss. Gomez?" The teacher threatens. I expect her to shut up and listen to the lesson, but instead leans back in her seat, and crosses her arms.

"Try me." She stares at him.

"Office!" The teacher shouts and points at the door. Becky laughs, stands up, and makes her way to the door. But, before she even turns the knob she bows in front of the class. All of our peers start clapping and laughing.

"Thank you, thank you. I'll be here from 8:00 to 3:30, five days a week." She smiles and exits. The annoying glare the teacher wears makes me want to crack up all over again. Seeing Becky like this brings back so many memories. Memories that she'll most likely never remember.

"That was incredible." I praise her. She laughs.

"Thank you. I try." She says.

"You try and you succeed." I say as we start walking to the office together.

"Why'd you do that back there?" She asks.

"So I could spend detention with you." I answer her. She smiles at her shoes and looks back up at me. My breath nearly stops as I look in her eyes.

"Wow." I exhale.

"What?" She asks immediately looking behind her.

Please don't look away from me. I want to say.

"Your eyes." I say. She narrows her eyes at me in confusion.

"What about them?" She asks.

"They're- never mind." I dismiss it.

"No, tell me." She pleads.

"They're, like, I don't know- they're different."

"Different how?" She pushes.

"Different like bright. Like you're happy." I explain still looking at her.

"Happy?" She asks. I nod, "That's because I am happy." She smiles.

There she is. There's the girl I fell in love with, that I'm still in love with.

My heart aches a little when I remember why we're not together in the first place. Then, I remember that after detention today I have to help Dave. We have to track him down before he finds us and takes the program by force.
