"Now, if there's one thing real vampires seem to have in common, it is their reluctance to tell the world about who, and what, they are" i say as i write on the board, hearing someone whisper in the back of the class. "And i would suggest that gossiping could be done at lunch and not while i'm teaching Mr Thomas, is that clear"
"Yes Professor Bailey" gods how i hate the name we had chosen.
"Now, can someone tell me what a vampire could mean?" i ask and turn towards the class, only a few of them seem uninterested, but most of them seem to actually try. I mean, it's occult class, you're not really here if you don't want to be. "Come on people, we went through this two days ago" and a girl on the second row holds up her hand. "Yes, Ms James"
"It's a flexible metaphor" she answers and i nod, gesturing for her to continue her answer. So she glaces down at her notes before speaking again. "You know, death, sex, change, stagnation, loss of self, loss of agency, having to keep on'es real self secret, the possibility of something lasting forever: love, hate grief."
"Correct, glad someone was listening. The vampire is an outside. He's the perfect metaphor for those things. He's someone who looks human and sounds human, but it not human, so he's always on the margins" and the class lets out a laugh together with me. "There comes a time for every vampire when the idea of eternity becomes momentarily unbearable. Living in the shadows, feeding in the darkness with only their own company to keep, rots into solitary, hollow existence." i look out over my class to chose someone who has to read a part of their essay. "Mr Thomas, since you had time over to gossip, would you like to present something out of your essay?"
"Nah, i'm good" he answers and the class laughs. I even let out a small laugh with them.
"Okay, Mr Malcolm, how about you?" i ask the boy next to him, the one he was gossiping with. Also i know that he cares more about his grade then his friend there.
"Sure" he answers and pull out a page to start reading. "When the word vampire is said it evokes Hollywood images of handsome men and beautiful woman, seductive creatures with fangs that lure in their prey with their hypnotic stare along with their good looks, wit and charm. Once the prey is seduced, the vampire goes straight for the throat, biting down and draining their blood and ultimately their life. More recently the imagines may be of a sexy vampire who is trying to pass as human in some High School setting that is amazingly fast, and strong, yet trying to be sensitive. Some sparkling in the sun and others must avoid it altogether, while still others wear some enchanted ring or jewellery in order to walk in sunlight. Oh yes, and let's not forget their ability to go on living forever because one of the most incredible quitelies is a vampire's immortality, unless they have a wood or silver stake driven through their hearts, or end up decapitated and burned, which would swiftly end their immortal rain. Whichever version of vampire you envision will depend on the most recent book, movie, or television series you're intrigued by. These imagine are the glorified Hollywood imagines that are spoon fed to us daily, but these are not the true definition or characteristics of a real vampire. As much as most people believe that the imagine of a vampire was spawned from the story of Dracula written by Bram Stoker that is certainly not the case, the story of the vampire started thousand years ago and span the globe, and continues to engross society today. Every culture has their own story and origination point and these stories have spawned a growing fascination with vampires. It is important to look back and see where it all began in order to undercover the truth of real vampires today." i hold up a hand for him to stop and he does.
"Excellent Mr Malcolm" i say and lean back onto my desk.
"Professor Bailey?" Ms Marble asks from the third row to the right and i nod for her to ask her question. "You've made us explain what WE think the allure of vampirism is, what do you think it is"
"Immortality" i answer steady as i already knew the answer. "Death is the one predator we can't escape. But vampires have found the loophole so many of us crave. I think that's the allure of vampirism. The chance to live forever, maybe with the one you love" i spin my ring as i speak now. "Maybe to get revenge, or maybe just for the thrill of living forever and getting to see everything around the world"
"Do you believe that they exist" someone blurts out but i don't care to point that out. "Do you believe in vampires? Not the sparkly variety"
"I would believe that just because we haven't meet anyone, doesn't mean they're not real. They're usually not the cape-weaking, 'mwah-hah-hah-ing' types, but rather people with ordinary jobs who just happen to consume blood" i meet the gaze of a pair of almost red brownish eyes in the middle of them all. And all i do is smile at her as she smiles back. "The strength of the vampire is that people will not believe in him. Vampires occur everywhere, but in busy cities, no one notices" and just as i say that there is a knock on the classroom door. I excuse myself and go to the door to immediately feel the person on the other side. So i have a smile as i open the door ajar to speak with her.
"Sorry, am i interrupting?" Natasha's voice is low, low enough for the class not to hear us. Except for the other pair of red eyes in there.
"Just going over vampirism, can it wait?" i ask and she sees the comical in this.
"Yeah, sorry, i need to borrow your office, mine is filled with students trying to study" she says with a smile. Natasha Bailey, Human Social and Political science professor at Cambridge. And me, Y/n Bailey, Occult and Witchcraft professor. How could we be more different?
"Sure" i don't close the door fully as i go back in to my desk and pull out the key from my purse. Coming back to the door and giving it to her. She gives me a thanks and kiss on the cheek before walking away. "Now, can someone remind the whole class of our new homework since most of you fell in late this morning" the red-eyed girl raises her han. I smile as i nod for her to speak.
"Chapter five to ten in New Moon, until thursday" she answers and some back in the class sign.
"Good you were listening Rebecca" i say with a smile and turn back to the board and finish the lesson. I hear multiple whispers about the benefits they find she gets, which are untrue. But as class ends and everyone walks out, she comes up to me.
"Y/n?"
"Yes darling, what can i do for you?"
"They won't stop, they're practically bullying me" i look up to meet the silver lining in her eyes.
"Hey, Rebecca, this about how jealous they would be of you if they only knew who your parents where" i smile again as i walk around the desk to put my hands on her shoulders. Pulling her into a hug as i remember my brother and Wanda. Only reason she's here is because of dying of cancer when she turned 19 and this was the only way to save her. According to Bucky and Wanda who begged me, and of course i caved, she's my niece. Only problem came when they remembered that they'd die and she would still be 19, so now she's out responsibility. Ever since they died, she's moved around with us and pretends to me our adopted daughter and niece. Which isn't' totally untrue, it's actually accurate. "Now, get going before Natasha catches us here. She'll have our throats if she knows i made you come late"
"I'll see you later" and with that she scurishes off out of classroom and into the hall, closing the door behind her. Only letting me get one breath before the door opens again for the next class to some in. I begin to rewrite things on the board as i work with curse of witches and history of them with this class.
Natasha was wrong, it wouldn't be just us in the end. It would be our family of three. Me, Natasha and Rebecka. Changing names sometimes and surnames as we move around. So, in the end, it's the three of us.
The End
A/n i really hoped that this didn't go to shits. I think i liked this better than the one with Wanda, even though i liked their happy ending. But this really gave me a chance to improv and work on angles i didn't think of before. And as it's a rewrite, i've gotten to do a breakdown of the first one and i see how much i've improved in my writing. So all i do is thank you for the support and hope you take the time to read my other stories as well. The other stark with Wanda Maximoff, Never letting you go with Penelope Garcia, Best friends sister with Lexie Grey or Agent Flower with Natasha Romanoff.
Thanks for reading it and i wish you a good day/evening/morning/night.
