No Such Thing: John Mayor

"Hey, we just heard." I enter the room with Miles. "Is she alright?"

"Yeah. They gave her something to help her rest." Whitney nods and I walk over to Lana before grabbing her hand.

"How are you holding up?" Miles asks.

"I kind of hoped I'd seen my last hospital room in a while."

"Hey, I heard." Clark enters from the corner of my eye.

"She's okay." Whitney assures. "Aren't you supposed to be in Denver to see your mom?"

"I leave in a couple days. Just have a few more loose ends to tie up." I tell him and Chloe enters.

"Hey, hey." Miles leads her out of the room.

"So, they're..."

"Yeah, I'd assume so." I tell Whitney.

"Haven't seen you with Mateo." Whitney inquires.

"Things got complicated."

"I'm sorry. But I'll beat him up if you want. Just say the word."

"Noted." I scoff. "C'mon, let me get you something to drink."

"Okay." Whitney kisses Lana on the forehead before we leave and I share a nod with Miles as he enters back inside. "So, you finally got it off, huh?"

"Yeah. Best day of my life." I look down at my ankle and he scoffs. "How are you doing?"

"I'm alright."

"You don't have to be, Whitney. Forever how long you want." I shove my hands in my jean pockets.

"How old were you when your dad died?"

"I was eleven."

"And you were there when he..."

"Yeah." I nod.

"Who shot him?"

"A man named Joshua Welling."

"Is he in jail?"

"Yeah. He's in a correctional facility in Aspen."

"Good." Whitney nods. "Did your dad teach you how to play football?"

"He was quarterback in high school." I nod. "Then went into law enforcement."

"He was a cop?"

"Yeah." I half whisper. "And after he was shot, I found out he had his gun on him. And I checked the clip, it was full. He could've shot Joshua, but he didn't. And I'll never know why."

"Do you think about it?"

"I used to. All the time. But it's been three years. And maybe I'm not meant to know what really happened on that street. Or know why it happened. But I know what I did right and what I did wrong. And I have to live with it."
