As The World Caves In: Matt Maltese
"Lana." I rush into the hospital room before pulling my hood off my head.
"Brianna." Lana cries before hugging me. "Thank you for coming." She sobs and I hug her back before we pull away.
"Hey, stranger." Miles now hugs me.
"Hi." I squeeze him before we pull away. "Hey." I hug Chloe.
"Hey." Chloe squeezes me.
"How's he doing?" I look at Jason in the bed.
"The doctors don't know. His heart's beating a mile a minute, and they can't get his blood pressure down." Lana tells me.
"That's a little bit odd for someone who's unconscious, isn't it?"
"They said he's in some sort of a panic mode, like he's having a severe nightmare."
"What happened? Lana, tell me every detail. Everything you remember." I urge.
"He, um, came by the Talon to pick me up for lunch, and I ran upstairs to grab a jacket. And I heard a crash. That's it. He's been...he's been perfectly healthy, he's even been starting those ginger shots you got him on, Brianna, but the doctors say that if they can't get his heart rate down that he could have a heart attack."
"They must have some idea of what caused this." Clark speaks up.
"I wish I could help them. But he was just studying all morning before he came to the apartment. The first time I saw him, he was lying on the Talon floor."
"Well, let us know if there's anything we can do to help, okay?" Chloe says.
"They need his insurance card. It's, um, it's in my apartment. Could you guys go get it for me? I don't wanna leave his side." Lana inquires.
"Yeah, okay." Miles nods.
"I'm gonna go with them, check out the accident, okay?" I raise my eyebrows.
"Yeah. Okay." Lana nods back. "Brianna, please, I don't know what's going on." Her voice breaks.
"Hey, hey. Listen to me." I place my hands on her shoulders. "Jason's gonna be okay. I'm gonna find out who did this. They won't get away, I promise you. Now, what I need you to do is to stay here and watch him. And if he has another nightmare, you call me. Okay? And you tell me how long the nightmare lasts."
"Why?" Miles wonders.
"The longer they are, the more painful it is." I tell him and Lana gasps. "Lana, I know, I know. But I need you to do this. Can you watch him and call me if he has another nightmare? Can you try to keep it together? For him?"
