The Body of an American: The Pogues

"What did you say to Loeb?" I ask as we walk down the block.

"Well, I disagreed with his decision." Jim replies.

"Yeah, I'm sure you kissed him on the cheek too."

"I said I'd break him. Words to that effect. Loeb said it was for the best. I should've walked away. I just hate to quit."

"You didn't quit." I stop him. "You were fired. What can you do?"

"Oh, there's things I can do." Jim nods.

"I thought you said you didn't have any legal moves left."

"I don't."

"You wanna be a cop so bad, you're willing to break the law?" I grin before crossing my arms.

"I'm willing to bend it a little, yeah. You're happy I got fired, huh?"

"No."

"Then why are you smiling?"

"Because, it's about time you turned into me." I smile and he chuckles. "I know that you'll never quit. And that's one of the things I admire that about you."

"Same here."

"But they have you directing traffic, Jim. Why keep beating your head against a wall?"

"I'm a cop, Brianna. I'm a cop."

"And a good one too." I nod as we stop in front of Bruce's house. "And I'll support you with whatever you decide. Just talk to my mom. It's gonna be alright, Jim." I hug him. "Thanks for dinner. Goodnight. I love you."

"I love you too." Jim hugs me back before I pull away and head towards Bruce's front door.

"That's a nice shirt." Bruce says as we eat breakfast in the kitchen.

"Thanks." I swirl my spoon in my cereal. "Kent gave it to me."

"I know." He nods

"Okay." I scoff before starting to eat my eggs.

"I saw you bring in a big bag last night."

"Yeah, just had a lot more clothes than I thought, you know? I have a lot of black t-shirts, you can take some if you need."

"Thanks."

"Course." I pour some apple juice in his glass and push it forward.

"You excited for your first day of college?"
