The Scientist: Coldplay
"Sorry I'm late." Clark enters the diner. "I've been sleeping walking. How's your day?" He walks past me.
I place the lid over the chocolate orange tarts I baked a half hour ago. "Well, it's looking pretty good now." I smirk.
He shakes his head. "I set myself up for that one."
"Obviously."
"Can I make myself coffee? With a shot of cynicism?"
"Only because you used cynicism correctly." I turn and walk past him. "So, why so cheery?" I joke.
"Uh, I don't know. I'm just in a mood. I don't know why." He clears his throat as he makes his coffee.
"But there's no particular reason for this mood? Or for the sleep walking?"
"No."
"Uh-huh."
"You don't believe me?"
"No, I believe you. If you say there's no reason for the mood or the sleepwalking, then there's no reason for the mood and sleepwalking. You're simply nuts."
"Or bipolar. That's very big nowadays."
"No, no, Arielle, you're wrong." Eddie follows my boss out from the kitchen. "They built the fire to throw themselves on it when their families found them!"
"Eddie, you're crazy! They built the fire so that they could stay warm their first night here." Arielle tells him.
"Arielle, I am the recording secretary for the Smallville City Council, I think I know how my town was founded!"
"Can nobody talk about anything else but this stupid festival, Jesus Christ!" I raise my voice and everyone looks at me. "That came out a lot louder than it was supposed to, didn't it?"
"Yup." Clark pulls the lid off the tarts.
"Good." I turn. "Hey." I grab the lid and place it back on.
He eats a tart. "I'm taste testing. Making sure no one gets salmonella."
"Don't make me fire you."
"This festival is commemorating the founding of our town, young lady." Eddie heads over.
"Yeah, so you keep saying for the past two hours!" I stress. "So either resort to a more quieter protest like sign language or get out, Eddie." I grab my pen and pad off the counter.
"She's bipolar." Clark nods and I elbow him in the chest, making him grunt.
