Brett is in the centre of the dance floor, dancing all his stress away from the week.
He doesn't hear the music really, only feels the beat in his body. He just moves.
He hasn't been sleeping well. Ghosts of the past and future have been haunting him, keeping him awake. Work has also been stressful. But work always is, isn't it? He can't wait to earn his spot in the music industry and start working for real. Will he ever really become a soloist? Mesmerize everyone with him playing the violin? Will it give him more focus? More stability? Which places will he visit? Where will he go and where will he live? Hopefully far away from here. Although he will miss his friends dearly, he is so ready for a new start, to leave all the ghosts haunting him behind. But can he cope life without them?

The lights flash their stroboscopic colours, the beat is heavy, the alcohol flowing through his veins making his moves bold. He reaches inside himself, totally focusing on feeling his body. Pushing his brain and it's thoughts to the back. Now is not the time to think, just to move.

There is already a crowd around them. Peter and Mason are dancing with 3 girls in some sort of awkward circle. Vincent is all over this cute chubby girl with pigtails, because why not?
Nowadays they only have to enter this place and everybody is gyrating towards them like they are the central gravity point. Like bees to honey.
But he isn't that sweet now, is he?
But it looks like nobody cares. Everyone wants to be seen with them. Want a piece of them. He never has to complain about lack of attention. How did they become this popular? But it's also very taxing. Always having to be social. Be the person they expect him to be. Wear his mask. Of course he's good at upholding it. Has even perfected it. But tonight he would like to just dance. No one troubling him. No hook ups. Exhausting his body to the core so he can finally, finally, sleep. But the flirting around him is hard to ignore. In more way than one. Just like now.

A beautiful red head is coming nearer and nearer. She tries not to be too obvious about it, but he isn't that thick. He tries to ignore her, but her presence is forced upon him. His gaze lingers on her for a moment too long. She sees it as an invite.

Okay. Why not then. Let's get this dance started.

He turns towards her and steps forward. But before reaching her, his eyes wander over the bar area.
And there he is. That man from last week. Standing at the exact same spot.

Oh?

His gaze is obviously pinpointed on him again.
He looks him directly in the eye, the connection almost visible like a straight line of electricity through the room..
The man blinks a few times, and tonight he doesn't back off that easily, he doesn't turn away.
What does he want? Does he even want anything at all?
Brett can't figure out what he sees in those eyes, in that particular look.

Intriguing. Who are you?

Suddenly he feels his lips locked by the girl standing before him. He almost jolts away, just barely able to stop himself. He had forgotten her for a moment. Luckily she doesn't notice. He returns her kiss, because he's supposed to, right?
He gazes at the bar again. Still those eyes fixed on him. But what is it?
A pained look? Is it really that?

He tilts his head up once in a gesture that says something like 'What?!'
The man breaks their eye contact immediately and looks away.

"Hey... Brett..." a sensual voice breathes in his ears. It tickles. "You want to have some fun with me?"

He blinks a few times in confusion and looks at the woman he is holding in his arms. She licks her lips provocatively. She is beautiful. Her red curly hair soft. It will bob nicely beneath him, won't it?

He squeezes his hands on her waist shortly, getting his intensions clear.
"Of course. You look like a really fun person to me." he smiles his most tempting smile. It doesn't reach his eyes though. But she doesn't see. Does she even care?

The girl laughs. It's a fake laugh. Of course it is.
She takes his hand and drags him off the dance floor to the 'dark room' to have some 'fun'.
Brett glances one more time at the bar, but the man seems not to look at him anymore.

...

Half an hour later he is back on the floor again. The music hasn't changed, or so it seems.
It was nice. She was very cooperative and quite quickly satiated. Like they all are.
She was clearly just in it for his body. That's only fair, because so was he.
And her hair did bob beautifully like he expected. Her breasts did too.
It was a fun exercise. Nothing more, nothing less.

Standing in the centre of the room again, more relaxed now, he can't help but let his eyes to wander back to the bar. Curiously searching for that one particular face in the crowd.
Yes! That black haired man is still standing there in the same spot as ever and watches him once again.
Huh? But what is wrong? His face looks very sad now, eyes shadowed and narrowed as in... tired? When they meet eyes, he turns his face sideways, his sad eyes looking down.
He gets up, leaving his beer behind and walks to the Hawaiian shirt guy and starts a conversation. Are they here together? Are they friends?
Then he suddenly leaves.
Why? He didn't finish his drink yet, did he?
Brett looks at the retreating back in confusion. He keeps wondering why he left.
But most of all Brett wonders why it seems to bothers him so much.

VNV Nation: Time & Space

Tear apart the life and times of familiar faces
And tracing lines to what connects me and binds me to
Images of the remote and never-changing
Grand designs, style and grace
And am I

Lost in thoughts on open seas
Let the currents carry me
If I could would I remain
Another life for another dream

No turning back, face the fact
I am lost in space and time
Standing here, looking back in time

One and all let us celebrate the rise and fall
Celebrate the life and times of splendor
Desire and love constant and never-changing
The flow of time's closing lines
Can't tell if I'm just

Lost in thoughts on open seas
Let the currents carry me
If I could would I remain
Another life for another dream

No turning back, face the fact
I am lost in space and time
Standing here, looking back in time
