Chapter 43

I awaken to the sound  of muffled words along with quiet tapping, I open my eyes as I expect to see the usual view from the hotel balcony but the memories come flashing back from yesterday as I'm met with the white clean aesthetic of the hospital room "Good morning dear" The petite nurse says as her back faces me, she continues to tap her pen off the clipboard she holds in her arms "Oh, sorry" She turns around and takes a couple steps towards me "I'm Dr Lawson, lovely to meet you" She reaches her hand out to me as I blink forcefully to wake myself up "Not quite awake just yet, are we?" She politely laughs before retreating her hand back to her side, I gaze over to Lando who still rests peacefully in the bed, his skin losing some colour as his hair is slicked back out of his face "Did you stay here all night darling?" The doctor looks at me with careful eyes as she realises my appearance, I slick my hair down with my hand as I attempt to make myself look that tiny bit better "Um... yeah I did. I really didn't mean to, I just fell asleep, I honestly didn't mean too" I rush my words out, scared that the doctor will ridicule me for staying here after being allowed to see Lando outside of the visiting hours last night "Darling, calm down, it's ok" The middle aged woman speaks gently as she continues to look at the machines and scribble words down onto the clipboard before she places the clipboard back into it's slot at the end of Lando's bed "So... I know you aren't family since we got the call that the family will be flying in soon, so who are you?" The doctor raises her eyebrows as she walks over to the door and silently shuts it after looking around the hospital hallway, my nerves kick in now as I expect her to kick me out "Well, I'm his girlfriend, I know I shouldn't have stayed last night, I'm sorry" I pull myself off the chair as I begin to gather my items before I de-wrinkle my dress with my hands "Oh dear, I'm sorry" The woman's facial expressions now filled with sympathy as she stares at me "Take a seat again, I know how hard this is, I've been in your shoes before" The doctor walks closer to me as I slowly let myself fall back into the chair, mentally and physically drained from yesterday's events "A couple years ago, I think maybe 4, my boyfriend..." She looks down at her left hand "Sorry, I should say my fiancé" She holds her left hand up to see a dime of ring presented on her ring finger "Congratulations" I find the strength to give her a smile as she gazes down at the ring with a grin on her face "He got in a bad motorcycle crash, was in a coma for a year, we were together 15 years. Never believed in marriage or that sort of thing, we were happy the way we were but after the crash we decided to go for it, you're never too old to get married!" I appreciate the doctor for trying to bring laughter to my life but it feels wrong to be happy as Lando lies basically lifeless not even 10 feet away from me "I stayed by his side as much as I possible could, there was times the nurses had to drag me out of the room. I wish I could have been there for him waking up, god knows how it felt for him to wake up after a year to no one in the room with him..." She seems to be thinking about something as she goes silent and stares at Lando in the bed "I always wanted to be a doctor my whole life, every since I was a child... I would make my parents get my doctor play kits for my birthdays and Christmas" She quietly laughs to herself as the memories replay in her head "Being a doctor isn't just about saving lives you know?" She turns to look at me as a gentle smile begins to form on her lips "Lando is getting moved up to a better room around lunchtime today, his family are allowed to visit whenever... so I'll help you out since I know how it feels to be in your shoes. I'm going to put you down as his wife but you need to promise me you'll get your own rest, this new room has it's own walk-in bathroom along with a toilet and shower, also has a pull out bed in the sofa" She stops for a second as she looks me hard in the eyes "What's your name, I don't think I caught it" She brings out a notepad from her trousers "Sofia" My croaky voice speaks out, desperate for a drink to quench my thirst "Sofia Norris, it has a lovely ring to it... the cafeteria is down the hall and then the first right, you should go get yourself something to eat and drink, and then there's toilet's right opposite this room, if you need a toothbrush the shop which is down the hallway and the second left does them" She nods her head at me once more before she begins to walk towards the door "Please don't make me regret doing this, you better take care of yourself, it's easy to lose yourself when a loved one is hurt. Take it from me, I've had the experience" She gives me a smile whereas her facial expressions scream regret and hurt as she quickly glances between me and Lando once more before she walks out of the room gently closing the door behind her.
