Jiang Cheng had blanked out; he had no memory how and when Lan Xichen had helped him to his feet, and accompanied him to his work station.
He suddenly blinked, and he found himself - just like the proverbial Dorothy, even without clicking his heels three times - among subdued candle light, shiny bottles of amber liquor, inside the embrace of the one who, he knew now, loved him the best, wanted him the most.
He looked up, pushing the taller man away from himself gently, sharply aware that Lan Huan should not be behind the counter with him, and whispered:
- I will try to be better for you. Wait for me.
The young lawyer smiled and just shook his head.
- Good things don't come easy. I love you. I'll pick you up at 10. I promise. I am just across the street, husband.
He reached out and caressed his face, and as Jiang Cheng blinked again – he was gone, like a breath, like a sigh.
