Mike Flannegan's couple days off work turned into a week, then two weeks, and then – three weeks. All his subordinates were amazed and worried about this total change in their beloved Captain's routine. Everybody speculated that it must have been something truly tragic, happening at home, for their workaholic boss to be absent for such a long time.
The highest ranking Sergeant took up his job, interim, and soon people fell into routine, just like always, and the rumors about him subsided. No one had seen him in the last weeks, and his colleagues truly believed he was outside of town. They were pitying him at first, but then – slowly forgot about him.
Out of sight, out of mind.
The bitter truth was that Mikey was just a couple of blocks away from the Precinct, almost all the time, day and night. The truth was that he didn't really care if he'd ever get back to work, to this job, to his previous position even. He already had what most people craved: a fair amount of money, a big house, a reputation that was unblemished, great health and great fitness, autonomy, prestige, contentment.
Yet, it was not enough. It had never been enough.
He craved what the two hateful fools had: the adoration of someone who was his match.
***
He had started checking on Jiang Wanyin the day Lan Xichen took off for Thailand. He had been pretty certain that after his heart-to-heart with the bǎobèi they would break up, it would all fall to pieces between them, and his cravings would be finally satisfied, extinguished. But it hadn't worked. For some illogical reason, it had all backfired even. They somehow became even closer. Inseparable.
On the one hand, his worry about how he would be stalking the both of them simultaneously fell away, it wasn't a worry any more. On the other hand – he was gnashing his teeth so hard, seeing them together so much, that his healthy, sturdy teeth started hurting. Badly.
He was falling to pieces, he was the one to be doing it and not them, and sometimes he started noticing it in the mirror too, but he didn't care any more. His overexhausted brain couldn't even process the thought that – looking the way he did now – it was less and less likely for Lan Huan to even like him any more, look at him, notice him. After all, his ex-lover was as vain as fuck, he liked pricey, shiny things!
