It smelled like flowers.
And... and you could sense the bright light through your still closed eyelids.
You hadn't given much thought to the afterlife. But this didn't seem so bad... You heard a distant hum of voices.
...And felt a steady sleeping breath in your hair.
His body cocooned yours.
Benimaru... what are you doing here-
"Be- Beni" Your shallow voice rasped... You opened your eyes and looked down your body on the futon of your room... everything looked- normal. "I'm- a-"
Beni's eyes fluttered awake at the movement of your body. "Y/n-" He gasped as he rolled to hover above you, his eyes filling with tears.
Your eyes watered too. "We're... alive?" He collapsed on top of you. His tears fell, wet against your chest as he kissed above your heart. You rubbed his back with one hand and cradled his head with the other. You wrapped your legs around him to hold him closer. "How- did you save me?"
His grip at your waist tightened. "I don't know. I just refused to let them take you from me." He shifted up to kiss you, and your lips trembled in his as his tears dropped to your cheeks. "I love you."
"I love you, too." You sobbed under him. He rolled to his back and pulled you to lay on his chest. You held him as close and as tight as your weakened body could. He kissed the top of your head and soothingly rubbed your back between the near suffocating embraces in disbelief that you'd finally opened your eyes.
When you'd both calmed, he tilted your head up to look up at him. "You should see your eyes."
He hopped to his feet and extended his hands to help you. You fell into him, but did manage to walk. "Fuck. How long was I out?" Your stomach grumbled fiercely.
"3 days." He nodded to the flowers. "Company 8 bought you flowers every day. So did your friends in town. Gaku, Haru, Akio, Sato, Granny-" The bouquets were all lovely.
He guided you to the mirror. You'd feared you'd be horribly mangled, scarred, but the only thing different about you was your eyes. The inner part of your iris was the same, but the outer edge was now a luminescent ashen gray.
"No one will ever be able to hurt you like that again. You are pyrokinetic now." He kept as much physical contact with you as possible as he spoke. He'd spent the last 3 days terrified you'd never wake up. That despite his best efforts, it still wouldn't be enough to save you. Yet here you stood. Stronger.
"Is- the town okay?" Your voice slowly returned to you.
"Yes. Rebuilding is going well-"
"Y/n!" You heard your sister scream from downstairs.
"Konro and I invited your family to stay here while you recover." Beni explained. "And insisted they move here given the circumstances-" He stopped himself. He didn't want to worry you. You just woke up...
"What circumstances?" You tried to ask, but you were loudly interrupted by your sister.
She roughly slammed the sliding door open. "Sister!" she almost tackled you, but Beni stepped in front of you, stopping her with a palm at the top of her chest.
"She just woke up. Be gentle." He instructed before releasing her to embrace you. Your father stood in the doorway, eyes watered.
You'd rarely seen your father cry. He held you and your sister before approaching the crossed armed Beni at the other side of the small room.
He wrapped his arms around Beni, who, at first, looked fiercely uncomfortable in the arms of a weeping man. You smiled softly at Beni as your sister still held you. "Thank you for saving my daughter."
