Colby couldn't believe it.

He didn't want to believe it, even though it was so clearly happening right in front of him. Sam was on the ground, kneeling in front of katrina, a black velvety box in his hands. He was saying something to her, but Colby couldn't hear a thing. It was all white noise; Sams words, kats' tiny happy sobs, Colby's name on Brennans lips.

Brennan was speaking to him in a low hushed worried tone, gripping his shoulder hard. Colby couldn't register what Brennan was saying. His ears rang and his head pounded; he couldn't take his attention off of Sam.

Sam, who was proposing to his girlfriend. Sam who was confessing his undying love right in-front of him.

The world tilts sideways and colby is burning. His heart shatters, his whole body feels like it's collapsing inward as his heart crumbles to pieces and drops haphazardly at his feet. He's cut by the shards of his broken heart, each piece slicing into his skin and leaving him breathless with the sudden grief he's overcome with. Colby is molten lava, melting and smoldering with pain.

He can't breathe.

The glass of alcohol in his hands shakes as his hands start to tremble.

Colbys vision blurs when he realizes he hasn't taken a single breath since sam kneeled to propose almost two minutes ago. Brennans voice echoes in his ears like it's underwater. He's drowning. Colby is dying. He knows it. He's going to die, he can't breathe, sams proposing, it hurts, it hurts so much–

"Colby!" Brennan hisses quietly, loud all the same. Startled and shaken, Colby gasps, and suddenly the loud shattering of glass fills the room, and beer stains Colby's shoes.

Colby stares. He liked those shoes. Sam had gotten them for him last year for his birthday.

Brennan curses, holding on tight to his arm and dragging him forward. Colbys cheek smooshes against Brennans firm, solid shoulder, and Colby hiccups.

"M'sorry," he whispers, feeling everyone's eyes on him (especially sams, he can feel the blue stare burning holes in his skull). Sams wide-eyed gaze finds Colby's, and Colby breaks . "M'sorry, I didn't mean to ruin it – God, I'm so sorry – shit, fuck –" Brennan shushes him, turning Colby's head to press his mouth to his shoulder. Colbys hands tighten around the collar of Brennans shirt.

"Colby?" Sam

"Colby." Brennan speaks, a shaky smile on his face as he try's to save the night. Colby flinches at his name being spoke, swallowing down the bile in his throat. Brennan speaks again, but Colby can't hear him.

"What's wrong with Colby?" Sam is suddenly right there, and Colby jerks away from the nearness of the voice, almost falling out of Brennans arms. Brennan curses again and tightens his grip on Colby's body. Colby bites back a pained wince.

"Here, let me –" Sam starts to speak, but Brennan quickly interrupts him, his voice loud.

"No!" He shouts, and Sam reels back at the yell, eyes widening further. Colby hears Brennan swallow and mutter an apology for raising his voice. "I meant – uh, no, I've got him. He drank too much. He's a lightweight, y'know. . ." Brennan trails off, sounding a tad nervous, so Colby pipes up to reassure the situation.

"Yeah, he's right." Colby croaks, the lie sizzling on his tongue almost as much as sams gaze flares into his soul. "I was drinking, and Brennan startled me, and I dropped the glass. I. . . I. . ." Colby swallows, closing his eyes to distract himself from sams blazing stare. "Sorry."

Sams expression softens and his eyes gain that sweet, tender sheen that turns Colby's insides to mush and sends his heart into overdrive. "It's okay. I hope you feel better." Sam hesitates, hand outstretched to pat his shoulder to comfort, but then he retracts it, and Colby wants to cry all over again. Sam spares him one last worried gaze before looking back at Katrina, his mouth opened to speak. Kat doesn't let him though, leaping forward and wrapping her arms around sams neck and squealing.
