"What are we going to do?" Maliki paces in the middle of the living room. "They are taking pictures of the twins while they are at school now."
Another article was released yesterday and this time the topic was what Nathan and Violet do in their normal daily lives.
"They were even trying to get a picture up Violet's skirt. So the new article will be me smashing the camera." Nathan sits in his seat with his arms crossed.
Violet sits with her head hanging low looking at her hands picking at the skin around her nail beds. The day they were trying to get a picture up her skirt she came home crying. We felt so helpless because there was nothing we could do to help her but be there to hold her while she cried.
"I will go to the school and talk to them about keeping the photographers off the campus. I will also have someone make sure you two get to the car with no problem." I pull out my phone, looking for Greyson's number.
"What is the purpose of all this?" Nathan puts his hands on Violet rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
"They are trying to figure out who is taking over the family business. When they get pictures of you they get money." Hunter shakes his head looking at the twins.
"I'm going to tell them I took over. Then they won't be all over you guys." All their heads snap over to me.
"Are you crazy?" Maliki jumps to his feet.
"Yeah Lex, this will only shift their attention to you." Nathan agrees with Maliki.
"Maliki, they are trying to get pictures of our sister when she is vulnerable." Violet looks back down. "It will be better this way."
"Yeah and what do you think is going to happen when they find out my older sister, who is just as vulnerable as the other vulnerable sister might I add, is the new owner of the business?!" He snaps at me.
"They will leave our younger siblings alone. Besides, I will hire security to be with me when I go out." I get up. "It's happening. Deal with it." My phone goes off and I see it is Greyson.
I walked out of the room to answer it. "Hello Alexandria, I see you wanted to speak with me?" I end up in the dining room, I walk over to the window so I can see outside.
"Yes, I do. I want to see what we can do about telling everyone that I'm the new owner of Wright enterprise." The line goes quiet.
He finally mustered up the courage to ask the question Maliki was asking me, "Are you sure you want something like that out right now? There is a media frenzy surrounding your family name." His voice is full of worry making the pit in my stomach grow deeper.
I clear my throat. "Yes. If they finally get the answer they want it will die down for the rest of my family." I sigh, running my hand over my face in a frustrated manner.
He's the one letting out the sigh. "Okay, then would you like an in-person interview or an article?"
"Article."
"I will reach out to some people and set it up." I nod forgetting he can't see me through the phone.
"Okay, thank you, Greyson."
"You're a good sister Alexandria." I can feel my eyebrows furrow. "Not all siblings would put themselves in this position for the sake of their family." My throat begins to close up and my eyes water.
"Thank you." I breathe out. "I needed that right now." Soon the line goes dead and I am left here standing with the phone next to my ear.
"Honey bee." My arm falls from holding the phone up to my side. "Are you sure about this?" I completely crumble at the sound of my best friend's voice.
"This is a new level of low Hunter." I choke. "They were taking pictures up her skirt." My hand flies up to my mouth muffling my cries.
"Come here." I turn around and walk into his arms. He wraps them around me so tight I feel like I almost can't breathe. "This will die down. It's just because it's fresh."
"This is the rest of my life." I cry out. "I told him I didn't want this life yet he still forced it on me. The other kids don't want it anymore. To top it off all the offers I had gotten were taken back." He runs his hand through my hair.
"I will be here to help you through it all." This statement only makes me cry more.
'I am building a legacy. I am building an industry that you can't have when you get older, that your kids can have.'
The words he had said so long ago repeat. He told me a long time ago that I intended to take the business but I just didn't fully comprehend it until now.
"Hey, Lex there's a package here for you," Nathan says softly.
Hunter lets go of me, moving a little to the side so I could see Nathan. "Who's it from?" He shrugs, holding it out to me.
"Were you expecting anything?" Hunter asks, grabbing the box from Nathan's hands, and giving it to me.
"No." I walk with the box to the counter pulling a drawer out to grab a knife. When the knife is in my hands I stab the tape pulling it so the whole strip is cut. Setting the knife on the counter next to me, I open the box.
When I see what is inside I close it quickly before Nathan could see inside.
"What is it?" Nathan asks, walking towards me.
"Your birthday present," I answer quickly. "So back away. Now." Nathan slowly backs away and out of the kitchen. I know the way I said it startled him.
"What the fuck was that?" Hunter says the minute Nathan is gone.
I open the box once more, and everything inside is on full display. A dead bird with a card that said my name on it.
'We want what is ours.'
"It's my fucking inheritance."
