Everything feels like it's moving at one hundred miles per hour. I can feel time going by but my mind isn't processing it the way it should be. The ride to the hospital felt unreal. I sat and watched as the paramedics had to resuscitate my twin brother.
I didn't cry, didn't panic, I just stayed by and watched as it happened. If I tried to do anything I would have gotten in the way of the people who were trying to keep my other half alive.
When Nathan and I were six we made a deal that if one of us was in any trouble we wouldn't leave their side. I think he intended it for more if I was ever in trouble not anticipating that he would ever be the one who would have me by his side.
Alex told us that when we were in our mom's stomach we had our arms linked. She said when they brought that sonogram home she knew we would be inseparable.
She was right.
When we found out I had a heart murmur Nathan was by my side. When Nathan broke his arm I was the first to sign his cast. When I made the cheer team Nathan was the first person I called.
He was only older by two minutes but he always made sure to keep up the older brother role.
"From the looks of his injuries, he looks to have one broken rib, sprained wrist, a concussion, and his lung was about to collapse but he got here on time and we were able to repair it." The doctor reads the details off his clipboard.
"So why isn't he awake?"
"Because of how fast he had sustained the injury his body was going into a state of shock. We had to put him in a coma-like state so we could make sure he was stable enough to perform anything on him." He started moving the papers on his clipboard around, taking one out from under the clasp. "This is just the paperwork for us to know if there is anything he has any allergies to, just the basic information." Holding out the paper for Alex to take from him.
"Thank you."
"I am going to give you a moment alone." Walking out the door he pats Hunter on the shoulder looking at me as my eyes are still tearing up. "Don't worry kid. He's gonna wake up and in a matter of time he will be all good again." I wipe my tears with my sleeve.
Once the doctor leaves the hospital room is filled with nothing but the sound of Nathan's heartbeat. I feel relieved knowing that at least his heart was beating strong while the rest of his body was in shambles. I remember listening to a heartbeat for the first time when I was a little kid. I always thought it was weird but my mom saw it as beautiful.
Now I understand what she meant. The sound of a heartbeat is so much better than there being no heartbeat at all. I reach over and grab Nathan's hand in mine. He doesn't feel warm but not cold. I assume it has something to do with the temperature in the hospital.
