One year later
"Gabby, have you seen my duffle bag?" I call out to my friend, searching the room for the dark blue bag I need to put the things I am taking into it. "I can't find it anywhere." I get on my knees, looking under the bed. Man, there is a lot of dust. I need to clean underneath here more.
"Look behind your dresser. I put it there after I borrowed it."Gabby shouts back to me. I walk to the dresser, pulling it forward slightly, causing the bag to fall to the floor. I grab it, pull it entirely out of its place, and unzip it.
I smile at the bag, happy I found it and didn't have to buy one last minute. "Got it!" She walks into my room with my clothes from the dryer folded neatly. "Thank you." I take the clothes from her hands and put them into my bag.
Gabby wipes her hands on her pants. "Of course. Are you excited to go back home?" I felt hesitant to answer the question, so I chose not to. "I'm guessing no?" She looks up at me with curious eyes.
"It's complicated." I walk to my bedside dresser, open the top drawer, and take out socks and boxers.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"There's nothing to talk about. I'm going back for the anniversary of Brother's death. I'm not exactly on speaking terms with Violet." I attempt to summarize so I don't have to go into full detail. "Not to mention, every single one of my siblings will be in one place for the first time after a year." The thought sends shivers down my spine.
I had avoided the many invitations they sent me during my breaks, not wanting to deal with the family drama I am sure would come with us being together. This, on the other hand, was something I couldn't avoid as much as I wanted to. It would feel like I was disrespecting my brother, who had never done me wrong. I'm sure everyone will have a field day about me attending the family gathering.
"You never told me what happened between the two of you. When we met, you and Violet were closer than ever." I can tell she is trying to get me to talk about it.
i "You know what. I don't want to talk about it." After putting a few more things, I zip up the bag, throwing it over my shoulder. "I'm only going for a couple of days. I need to survive, then come home."
"If you can, please talk to your sister. You need each other." Gabby walks around my bed.
"I don't need her." I shake my head.
"Yeah. Then tell me why you had us watch her favorite movie six times. In a row." Gabby puts her hands on her hips. "My girlfriend was wondering when she came with me why we watched the same movie."
