TOMOKO AND CHISHIYA always aimed to be in separate games. If they were in the same game, it could be one that meant only one of them would survive or one that meant they had to betray each other. It just wasn't worth it. However, sometimes the Beach would place them in the same group, meaning they had to play the same game along with two other players.
This was one of those times.
The two were stood side by side in the lobby of an apartment complex. There was a multitude of different faces for Tomoko to study as she waited for registration to close: there was an elderly man and woman, a woman in athletic gear stretching, two female twins. There were others, too, but they were not as interesting to her as the two people she knew that were bunched into a corner. Their names were Aguni, a muscular militant, and his skinny friend, Jin. Their numbers were 3 and 21, respectively.
Tomoko's gaze was directed to her own number, shown on a locker key adorned around her wrist. She was nine. The numbers showed how important each person was in the Beach, the faction that Tomoko belonged to. Chishiya was ten. Tomoko was a number above him due to the fact she was smarter since she had spent all of her childhood studying, and she was also an all-rounder. A Jack of all trades.
Ever since Tomoko was transported to the Borderlands, she spent her free time training to defeat every game. She would solve puzzles and work out quite a bit, as well as studying the people around her.
She and Chishiya were planning on leaving the Beach but there were some...complications. One of the three rules of the Beach was that being a traitor meant death. Tomoko was constantly on the look out for people to help her plan, maybe even for people to use as a mean to her ends. Her endeavour had been unsuccessful so far.
Tomoko's focus was pulled away from her thoughts when she noticed two men walk into the arena. One had shaggy hair and the other was quite muscular; clearly a fighter.
She glanced at Chishiya out of the corner of her eyes and he glanced back, silently telling her he had seen them also.
"There's a lot of people here. Maybe one of them is a doctor." The Fighter said to his friend.
Tomoko glanced away from the situation, hiding the small smirk that had begun to form on her lips. She was a doctor and so was Chishiya. Maybe this was their bargaining chip; maybe these people could be of use.
"Erm, excuse me!" A different man said. His clothes were covered in grease and oil, clear sign he worked with cars. He walked over to the two guys that had just entered, "Do you know what this is?"
"It's a game--" The man with shaggy hair tried to explain but his friend cut him off.
"Shut up! Newbies will just slow us down."
Everyone's phones chimed and Tomoko looked down to it, noticing the timer on it had dwindled down all the way to zero.
"Registration has closed." An automatic voice said, "The game will now commence. Difficulty, Five of Spades. Game, Tag. Avoid whoever is 'it'. Discover and touch the symbol hidden in one of the building's rooms within the time limit. Time limit: twenty minutes. After twenty minutes, the time bomb hidden in the building will explode."
Spade meant this game was physical, using the players' strength. Thankfully, the number wasn't too hard and the rules were pretty simple.
Tomoko waited until everyone except her brother had left the lobby before she turned to Chishiya, "Seventh floor, south corner seems like our best bet."
Chishiya smiled at her, which was a rare occurrence for anyone but her to see, "I was thinking the same thing. That way, we can see most of the complex."
The two took the elevator up to the top floor and positioned themselves where they agreed they would. Tomoko searched the floors, seeing most of the players panicked and running around like headless chickens.
"Who do you think it is?" Tomoko asked.
Chishiya shrugged, "How am I supposed to tell? Well, it could be me for all you know."
Tomoko let out a snort of amusement, "Yeah but you would have told me by now."
He nodded, "That's true."
The attention of the two was directed down the hallway as they watched Aguni and Jin walk by. Chishiya waved at them but they ignored him, only showing him a glare.
Chishiya sucked in a breath, shaking his head, "Yeah, I've got a weird feeling about this..."
"Like always." Tomoko returned. Her brother was always cautious, which was good and it was something she admired him for -- but it was also laughable at times.
Chishiya leaned on the wall in front of him, craning his neck to search the arena like Tomoko had done moments prior. He scoffed in an amused way, "Yeah, looks like everyone's about to bite it like always."
Tomoko shook her head at him, endeared, "Says you. You're the King of staying unbothered and staying out of the action."
"You think of me as a King?" Chishiya teased.
Tomoko lightly shoved his shoulder with one hand, "No, I think of you as my annoying younger brother."
"By five minutes."
Despite Tomoko's words, she would do anything for her twin. During their childhood, she was the only one who cared for him. They had each other's backs, especially when their parents didn't. Tomoko always brought up Chishiya's achievements, no matter how many times their dad ignored the both of them. She always put in the effort to arrange family time with Chishiya and their mother despite the fact their mother was always distant, always sad. In fact, Chishiya was the reason Tomoko became a doctor. She didn't want them to ever be separated.
In short, Chishiya was Tomoko's everything.
Their phones chimed and the same automatic voice from earlier said, "The game will now commence. The tagger is on the move. Twenty minutes remaining."
Almost instantly after, heavy footsteps could be heard. They thumped against the floor. Tomoko watched as every player looked from left to right, from up to down, as they searched for the source of the noise.
Cheery fanfare music began to play, disguising the footsteps. Suddenly, a burst of gunfire cut through the sound. A tall, muscular figure wearing a horse mask had gunned down an elderly woman. They were clearly It.
Tomoko exchanged a smirk with her brother, "Now, things are getting interesting."
