UPON ARRIVING AT The Beach after the game, Kuina and Tomoko decided to grab a drink and relax beside the pool as they waited for Chishiya to return.
The pool was packed full of people like every other night, causing frequent splashes to catch the two women. Tomoko was tempted to dump her freshly squeezed orange juice over their heads, grumbling, "We'll never get dry at this rate."
"We're at a pool, what'd you expect?" Kuina returned with a laugh. Then, her eyes glistened with interest as she caught sight of something.
Tomoko looked over. She expected it to be Chishiya but instead Kuina was staring at Usagi and Arisu as they sat down on lounge chairs a few metres away from them. "Let's say hi." Tomoko said as she stood and breezed over to the two, followed by Kuina.
As the two sat down, Tomoko opened her mouth to speak but Kuina beat her to it. "Is she your girlfriend?" She asked Arisu.
Usagi looked at her in shock, "What? I'm not!"
"If you like each other, why not hook up?" Kuina suggested to the two mortified individuals. "You guys could die tomorrow. You should live while you're alive."
Usagi scoffed lightly, "That's rich from you."
Kuina simply giggled, brushing her words off. Tomoko frowned; Kuina liked someone. Since when? And why hadn't she told her? It could mess with their plans to betray The Beach -- that was the reason why Tomoko felt annoyance bubbling in the bottom of her stomach.
Kuina continued, "Anyway, my mother is stuck in the hospital. She can't even go to the toilet by herself, and I wound up here. That's why I need to survive and go home." She pulled her fake cigarette from her mouth and showed the two, "That's why I quit smoking. Back in the day, I couldn't stop smoking. But to survive the game, you need to stay healthy. I absolutely need to survive."
Suddenly, there was a loud crash and the cheerful music that had been playing cut out. Even from quite a distance away, Tomoko could see who it was and she sarcastically groaned, "Great. The militants are back from their game."
The large group of fighters were led by Aguni, Niragi and Last Boss. Each one had a weapon. Most had pistols but Last Boss had a katana and Niragi had a rifle.
"They're the militant corps at The Beach." Kuina lowered her voice to a whisper due to how quiet it now was. The militants were feared by everyone and could shun a crowd into silence with a single glare. "If you want to live in peace here, do not mess with them. General Aguni is an ex-special forces officer. He controls all the weapons at The Beach. The person who commands The Beach right now is Hatter and the idealist group, as well as the militants lead by Aguni. Right now, order at The Beach is very fragile. Both of these groups could clash at any time."
The militants continued to walk around the edge of the pool until they reached where the four were sat. Tomoko looked up at them with a raised eyebrow but Aguni only glanced at her with a blank expression before addressing Arisu, "Where's your friend?"
Arisu was silent, causing Aguni to smirk, "Oh, he's dead? Too bad. Yet someone like you still lives."
"You know each other?" Kuina asked Arisu but he continued his silence, clearly too frightened to speak.
"We were all in the Tag game together." Tomoko explained for her.
Aguni looked from Arisu to Usagi. He tilted his head at her before flicking his head to Niragi on his left, "Hey, bring that woman to my room."
"You got it." Niragi smirked.
He sauntered over to Usagi and attempted to grab her by her shoulders, but Arisu all of a sudden jumped up and blocked his path.
"You crazy?" Kuina hissed at him, "Don't get involved!"
Niragi shrugged it off, saying, "My boss says to bring you so that's what I'll do. Get up!" He grabbed Usagi's wrist but Arisu then grabbed his arm, pushing him away.
"Leave her." Arisu said, his voice as firm as he could manage despite the fact he was trembling.
"What a tough guy!" Niragi cackled. He turned to Aguni, "What should I do with him?"
"Break both of his legs so he dies in the next game."
"Oh, fuck off, Niragi!" Tomoko snapped, standing and walking over to him, "I'm sure you and your boss can find some other woman, hmm? One that won't barf when you have sex because, honestly, you have the face so disgusting not even your mother could love."
Gasps went through the crowd. Nobody had ever stood up to Niragi. Not in public at least and Tomoko was sure that if someone had done so in private, they had been shot and killed.
Niragi was unfazed, smirking, "Someone like you then?"
Tomoko met his arrogant gaze with a glare of her own. Even though her words were a cold whisper, it was still heard by everyone since it was silent with anticipation, "Touch me and I'll fucking kill you."
Laughing to himself, Niragi placed a hand on her shoulder. In one sudden movement, Tomoko had thrown the glass of orange juice in her hand onto him. He was soaked in the liquid and when he threw his hands up to block the object, the glass had shattered and embedded into his palms.
Tomoko found herself smirking, then smiling, then snickering. She had to hold her stomach due to the fact she was laughing so hard. Even when Aguni grabbed her shoulder tightly and she knew she was in major trouble, she couldn't stop herself from chuckling.
"What's going on here?"
A voice cut through the silence, loud and authoritative. Hatter walked toward them, eyebrows raised in questioning.
"None of your business, Hatter. Back off." Aguni returned.
Hatter shook his head, "The Beach is my business, so tell me what happened here."
Kuina sprung to her feet in an instant, "Niragi provoked a fight, Tomoko was defending herself." She said and Usagi and Arisu repeated it, nodding in agreement.
"That's not true, you bitch!" Niragi shouted, still attempting to get orange juice out of his eyes.
Hatter stepped toward him, "You and everyone else here know that The Beach is a place of solitude, rest and peace. You do not use your weapons to attack but to protect. Do not lay your hands on anyone else here!" Then, he turned to Aguni, "Keep your hands off the newcomers. Who is your boss?"
Aguni swallowed, pausing for a moment before replying, "I know it is you."
Hatter smiled, pleased. He then announced, "Executive members, meeting in the conference room! Niragi, take a goddamn shower and don't stink up the seats. Arisu, I want you to join us, too. Ann said you have potential."
Then, he and every other executive left. The music started and people went back to partying, the moment of tension over. Peace was restored for now.
Before she could leave, Kuina exclaimed to her friend, "You need to be careful, you're crazy!"
Tomoko simply smirked, "All the best people are."
