ONCE ALL THE players had been registered, a robot voice announced, "Difficulty, Queen of Clubs. Game, Target. Players must get into teams, maximum number four and minimum number two. Teams must knock the Queen of Clubs and their partner off of their beam; they have already been placed amongst the players. Time limit: 30 minutes. The game will commence when all players are on their beams."
Tomoko, Ann and Kuina made their way down some stone steps, all the three women holding hands tightly. They had quite some time to find a beam – one in the middle – as the other players were struggling to make teams.
"We don't know who the Queen of Clubs and their partner is. I doubt people will be peaceful and listen until we find out who the Queen duo is. We might have to knock them all off. We might have to kill them all." Tomoko said, regretful.
"We have to protect ourselves no matter what." Ann replied.
Kuina nodded in agreement. It was clear she didn't want to kill people nor fight them, but she would do so to ensure her survival. "No matter what."
When all of the teams had assembled, a countdown of ten seconds occurred. During that countdown, multicoloured balls began to drop into a basket at the end of the beam. As soon as one was picked up, another replaced it to always keep the basket full. The balls were originally blue but once picked up, they turned red. A soft hum came from the spheres and they lightly illuminated Tomoko's hand once she picked one up.
As soon as the countdown ended, people began to throw the spheres. Tomoko pulled the basket into the middle of the beam, and she and her lovers grabbed as many as they could carry and began to throw.
A sphere came hurtling towards Tomoko but she dodged it easily, tossing a ball back and hitting the person off of their beam.
Then, she threw another ball at a person who had aimed at Kuina. They soon fell off their beam.
Suddenly, Tomoko was shoved to the side by Ann. Shocked, she looked up to spot Ann dodging a sphere and throwing one straight back at someone who had attempted to knock Tomoko off of her beam.
And they almost had succeeded.
Tomoko was so surprised at the sudden push she had received that she lost her balance, and almost went tumbling off of the beam. Luckily, Kuina grabbed her arm and managed to haul her upright before she met her demise.
The gleaming balls were being thrown in every direction and it was getting hard to dodge them. Thankfully, there were only three teams left, not counting Tomoko's.
Tomoko grabbed ahold of the basket she had moved and placed it underneath the chute that dropped balls until the basket was full again. Then, she brought it back into the middle and grabbed two. She threw both at a person — the only one remaining on that team and managed to knock them off.
"Ann, watch out!" Kuina yelled.
Realising a ball was heading her way, Ann leaned down. The sphere went over her and hit a person on the beam beside hers. In return, Kuina killed the player that had tried to knock Ann off.
"There's only two players left!" Tomoko called out as she threw a ball at one of them. Then, she corrected herself, "Only one left!"
The last player realised that they were outnumbered and had no chance. They placed down their spheres and, tears storming down their face, got onto their hands and knees and began to pray.
The three women stopped, confused. The person was praying so quietly that they couldn't hear what they were saying.
But it didn't really matter because seconds later, they jumped off of their beam.
"Game cleared! Congratulations!" The announcer cheered whilst the women grimly stared at the beam the person had been praying only seconds prior.
"Fuck." Tomoko muttered under her breath, tears pricking in her eyes. Even though she hadn't killed the final player — and even if she had, it wouldn't have been done in a malicious way — she still felt guilt gnawing at her.
Gently placing their arms around her, Ann and Kuina led Tomoko out of the game arena.
Taking a deep breath, Tomoko buried down her emotions. She wiped the tears from her eyes and set her face into its usual unbothered look. Now was not the time to be vulnerable.
"Let's head to Shibuya," She told her lovers, not suggesting but telling them, "I was supposed to meet Chishiya there after our games but he wasn't there when I arrived. Maybe's he there now."
"Sounds as good of an idea as any." Ann nodded in agreement.
So, the three set off. It took them a few hours to reach Shibuya but when they did, they found it empty. So, they decided to head inside to a nearby store to collect some supplies.
They began to rummage around and Kuina managed to find a large water bottle. Wetting a cloth she had also found, she began to clean any wounds her girlfriends' had acquired as well as wiping the dirt and grime off of their faces.
Ann had found some snacks and was eating them, offering Kuina some when the girl asked. Tomoko was chewing on her apple from earlier, not having much of an appetite.
"You know," Kuina said after she finished cleaning Ann's face and got to reapplying the woman's lipstick, "this is sort of like a date."
"Not a bad one for the Borderlands." Tomoko replied with a chuckle.
Once Ann's lipstick had been applied, she grabbed Tomoko's chin and turned the woman's head to her. "Yours need doing, too." She mused before pressing her lips to Tomoko's.
Grinning, Tomoko kissed the woman back. Her hands rested gently on Ann's waist whilst Ann's hand had moved to clasp her cheek. Their gentle bodies pressed together, lips lingering on each other.
When the two pulled away, Kuina squealed and pulled them into a hug. After she covered the two with kisses, she exclaimed, "You're so cute! I love you both so much."
"I love you too—"
Before Ann and Tomoko could finish their shared sentence, screams sounded outside. They were followed by gunshots.
"Is it the King of Spades?" Tomoko questioned. It was the only conclusion she should come to.
Kuina nodded grimly, "It has to be."
