Chapter 4

My heart stopped for a second, but I was relieved when I realized who it was. Redhead, and snarky. Yep, it was Riley. She was looking at us, confused. In a way, I was glad she walked in on us being weird. She knew how lonely I had been before Tyler showed up. She looked at us, crossing her arms. He put me down and cleared his throat. But I couldn't think of a good excuse. She had seen us through the door, and now we had been caught acting like children while Derek did everything he could to protect us.

"We were just messing around, playing with the mop water; we got carried away," I said. She nods.

"Hm, well, you're lucky it was me that caught you and not Derek; he would have been pissed, especially since we all know how he feels about Tyler," She said. He scoffs.

"Feeling is mutual, but she's grown, and she can do what she wants; I hate to say it, but Derek hasn't been engaged with his girlfriend as much as he should be, so she wants to hang out and get crazy, she can, no offense to you, but Derek is a douchebag, I came for Addison, not for him," He said. She shrugged.

"Can't argue with that, he's a dick, but he's still her boyfriend, and he's very territorial of her, so be careful when you're in here, block the windows, lock the door," She said. I nod.

"Speaking of the dickhead, he's looking for you both, so I suggest you both dry off and see what he wants," She says, walking away. I let out a breath. I didn't realize I was holding in. And looked at Tyler.

We both dry off as best we can and head to Derek's office. We don't say much, but Faith keeps bumping me. I was worried that she would eventually stop warning me about intruders; she hadn't howled or barked when the door opened; maybe she smelled Riley coming and didn't think to.

Once we are both in front of his door, we look at each other and nod. I knock softly. He tells us to enter. He didn't need guards. He was always trying to show us how tough he was. When we get inside, he tells Tyler to close the door. And then he sits behind his desk.

"I got word from someone, mainly someone I know, they are coming to stay with us because he was in the army and he knows how to strategize, and his wife knows about weapons like her husband; I've made accommodations for them in one of the guest rooms down here," he said. I shrugged. Tyler looked at me and then to Derek.

"I've also been told Chloe wants to go outside; while I'm against it, I can't make her stay inside because she fights everyone, so I will allow you all one hour each day to roam the grounds, but not far while my father won't attack in seven inches of snow, it doesn't mean he won't have someone do it for him," he said. I looked at Tyler, smiling. Derek's eyes are burned with pain. I know he can't stand me being with Tyler, but I trusted him, and he did what Derek hired him to do.

"Now, onto our guests; please tell Dani I'm sorry I had no other choice, but our mother and stepfather are coming to town," he said. I gasp.

"I get to meet your mom and Walter?" I ask like a giddy schoolgirl. He sighs.

"Yes, but this isn't a meet-the-family sort of thing. It's a get them here and plan what to do, sort of thing," he said. He looked at our hair, which was still damp, and then saw Tyler with an unbuttoned shirt.

"Need I ask what the hell happened to you two?" He says. We look at each other. Knowing Derek is thinking we showered together or something.

"Um- the sprinkler system in the training room had a mishap, but Tyler fixed it, though we both got wet from it," I said. Lying. He nods, pursing his lips.

"Well, I'm glad you fixed it. That room hasn't been used in over five years, so if you got it fixed, we can send someone down to clean-"

"We sort of cleaned it, too, while we were there before the sprinkler system went crazy on us," I said. Hoping he would buy that one. He nods.
