I woke the next morning earlier than usual due to a fitful sleep. Upon checking my clock, I discovered it was only just past four in the morning. Great. Yay school day. Unable to comfortably lie in bed any longer, I rolled out gracefully onto the floor. Eventually standing, I went and found some yoga shorts, a red tank top and some joggers. Grabbing my iPod and a set of keys on my way out, I took my car for a spin. I only took lifts with Amity to save petrol and the environment.
Driving around the neighbourhood, everything was silent. The street lamps cast an eerie spotlight on the road and the dark green plants and trees surrounding the houses loomed creepily. Yeah, I was so not jogging this morning. I found myself driving aimlessly, ending up at the beach.
I parked my car in the allocated area and strolled down to the sand, slipping my socks and shoes off first. Who likes sand in their shoes. The sand was white and cool on my skin, refreshing before the sun could touch it. Making my way to the water, I allowed some memories to engulf me. That day. The bus route started out here, next to the beach. It then drove its normal route, but somehow the driver lost control and ploughed into the school. It was a mess. The stench of fresh blood, body parts lay askew detached from bodies, people were crying and screaming in pain, both physical and emotional.
That day, I had gone to the bathroom and had almost reached my group of friends before that damn bus came smashing through, obliterating everything and everyone. You know that scene in Mean Girls where Regina George is hit by a bus and just swept away? It was like that. But a million times worse. And with the driver found dead on scene, there really was no explanation.
The sun had just begun peeking over the horizon line, throwing an orange glow over the water. I was only ankle deep in the soft waves, but one thought came back to me. Why hadn't I been taken too? If the bus had arrived only minutes later, I would've been hit as well. I would have died along with all my friends. I wouldn't have had to deal with the months of depression and paranoia afterwards.
I was okay now, I guess, save the nightmares.
"If you keep staring at the sun like that you're going to go blind."
I whirled on the spot, splashing some water up onto my legs slightly. Tom stood with his hands in his pockets, gazing just past me. He was only in cargo shorts and a white tee with his dirty blonde hair ruffling gently in the breeze. I smiled at him and left the water to go meet him. We both sat on the sand together, me cross legged and Tom resting his arms on his knees.
"You don't remember me, do you." It was a statement rather than a question. I peered at Tom curiously. Examined him. His clear blue eyes held a sadness I couldn't place.
He sighed. "I was there. That day. I was in the library. I saw the whole thing happen from the window. And I couldn't do anything. I saw you just stop when your friends disappeared."
I gulped. I felt horrible I couldn't remember him. I racked my brain for anything familiar about him. Think, think, think...
"Glasses! You used to have glasses." I looked at his eyes more closely and noticed the faint line of contact lenses. "Tom Berry. I can't believe I didn't recognise you. You left after it happened, didn't you?"
He nodded. "My parents lost their eldest child. My sister. She was one of the few to actually die in the senior class. They couldn't cope staying here. So we left and came back at the start of the year. They wanted closure or some shit. It changed us all Terrie."
